EDMONTON, Alberta – The U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team fell to Czechia, 2-1, in its first preliminary-round game of the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup at Rogers Place.

“I’m proud of how our group competed today,” said Garrett Raboin (Detroit Lakes, Minn.), head coach of the 2024 U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team. “Credit to Czechia, they made it hard for us to find ice. We’ll need to learn from it and get ready for our next challenge, Finland, tomorrow.”

Matt Grimes (Locust Valley, N.Y.) opened the scoring five minutes into the contest when he capitalized from long range, launching a slap shot from center ice that found the top left corner to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. Carter Murphy (Conroe, Texas) picked up an assist on the play.

Team USA’s defense successfully killed off four Czechia power play opportunities in the first, including a five-on-three man advantage early in the period.

Czechia knotted the game up at one goal apiece at the 12:56 mark of the middle frame when Adam Novotny gathered a saucer pass from Adam Benak on a two-on-one and wristed the puck into the top left corner.

With just 3:47 left to play in the game, Czechia’s David Rozsival broke the 1-1 tie, collecting a loose puck just outside the U.S. crease before flipping the puck over the outstretched pad of Ryan Cameron (Berwyn, Pa.) to take a 2-1 lead that would hold for the remainder of the contest.

Cameron stopped 19 shots in goal for Team USA.

The U.S. is set to play Finland in its second preliminary-round game tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will broadcast live on NHL Network.

NOTES:  The U.S. outshot Czechia 31-21 … Team USA was 0-3 on the power play, while Czechia was 0-5 … Ryan Cameron was named U.S. Player of the Game.
