Team USA Tops Canada, 7-1, In Final Game of Collegiate Select Series

Under-18 Select Team Defeats Canada, 4-3 in a Shootout

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Tessa Janecke (Warren, Ill.) tallied two goals and an assist, while Annelies Bergamann (Troy, Mich.) recorded an 18-save performance in net, as the U.S. Women’s Collegiate Select Team defeated Canada 7-1 in game three of the Collegiate Series today at Canada Games Park.

Earlier in the day, Adrianna Milani (Toronto, Ont.) recorded the game-winning goal in the seventh round of a shootout as the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team topped Canada, 4-3.

With both wins, the U.S. Women’s Collegiate Select Team finishes the series with a 1-1-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record, while the U.S. Women’s Collegiate Select Team held a 0-1-0-2 record.

U.S. WOMEN’S COLLEGIATE SELECT TEAM 7, CANADA 1

Canada jumped out to an early lead, capitalizing on a 3-on-1 opportunity just 2:21 into the game. With 7:16 remaining in the first, Emma Gentry (Alpena, Mich.) tallied the first of Team USA’s seven unanswered goals, stuffing the puck into the net on a scramble in front.

In the second, the U.S. cranked up the offensive pressure, spending most of the period in the offensive zone. Caroline Harvey (Salem, N.H.) converted a power play goal right outside the crease on a pass from Cassie Hall (South Lyon, Mich.). Kirsten Simms (Plymouth, Mich.) extended the lead to 3-1 with a putback on the doorstop with 9:36 remaining.

With time winding down in the middle frame, the U.S. defense killed off 1:44 of a 5-on-3 penalty kill, keeping the score at 3-1. Janecke added a fourth early in the final period on a power-play opportunity. Kiara Zanon’s (Fairport, N.Y.) rebound putback on a power play shot from Simms 8:03 into the period proved to be the U.S.’ fifth score of the evening.

Laila Edwards (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) recorded the U.S.’ sixth and Janecke recorded its seventh, both on the power play, in the final minutes of the game.

The U.S. outshot Canada, 40-19. Team USA was 5-5 on the power play, while Canada was 0-5.

U.S. UNDER-18 WOMEN’S SELECT TEAM 4, CANADA 3 (SO)

Team USA opened the game with pace and grit, holding off Canada’s initial push. With 8:33 remaining in the period goaltender Morgan Stickney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made two point-blank saves to keep the game scoreless.

With 13:25 remaining in the opening frame, Sade Sandilands beat a screened Stickney with a rising shot from just inside the blue line to open a 1-0 lead for the home team.

The U.S. held the first power play opportunity of the evening but could not find the back of the net. Just three seconds after the U.S. power play ended, Team USA went on the kill, where a rebound popped out to an unmarked Stryker Zablocki who beat Stickney for the second tally of the game.

The U.S. responded with three unanswered goals in the second to enter the third period with a 3-2 lead. Just 2:25 into the second frame, Megan Healy (South Burlington, Vt.) got the U.S. on the board with a power-play marker, converting a shot from the high slot past the blocker of Alyssa Barrette. Sydney Stoughton (Mason, Ohio) tied the game with 4:52 remaining in the second, going top shelf on a 2-on-1 opportunity. Just 1:35 later, Annabelle Lovell (Hingham, Mass.) opened the first U.S. lead of the game, going bar down on a breakaway opportunity.

With the goalie pulled late in the third, Zablocki tied the game at 3-3 with 58 seconds remaining in the game on a scramble in front of the net. No teams scored in the 3-on-3 overtime, before Adrianna Milani (Toronto, Ont.) recorded the game winner in the seventh round of the shootout.
