VANTAA, Finland – The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team will meet Sweden on Sunday (Jan. 5) in its second preliminary-round game of the 2025 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship.

Today’s tilt marks the second preliminary-round game of the 2025 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship and the back end of back-to-back games to open competition. The U.S. sits at 1-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in Group A with one preliminary round game remaining after today.

Twelve different players tallied at least a point as Team USA opened the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Japan. Haley Box opened the game’s scoring just 4:16 into the first period before Evelyn Doyle, Christina Scalese, Maggie Averill, Bella Fanale, Emi Biotti and Mary Derrenbacher added the remainder of Team USA’s goals throughout the game. Goaltender Morgan Stickney recorded a shutout in net in the winning effort. The U.S. outshot Japan, 67-4.

The U.S. holds a 15-1-0-1 advantage all time over Sweden at the Under-18 Women's World Championship. The U.S. has outscored the Swedes 93-16 in those 17 meetings.

LAST TIME AGAINST SWEDEN

The U.S. last faced Sweden on Jan. 10, 2024 in the third preliminary round game of the 2024 tournament. Layla Hemp posted a 28-save shutout as the U.S. topped Sweden, 4-0. Haley Box, Mary Derrenbacher, Morgan McGathey and Kassidy Carmichael tallied goals for Team USA.

STICKNEY MAKES DEBUT IN NET

Goaltender Morgan Stickney made her Under-18 Women's World Championship debut in net in Team USA's 6-0 victory over Japan. It marked her first career victory at an IIHF event and first shutout in international play.

Under the guidance of head coach Liz Keady Norton, the U.S. has posted a perfect 6-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record in IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship play. Keady Norton is in her second season as head coach after leading Team USA to gold at the 2024 tournament.
