U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team Tops Canada, 4-1, In Opening Game

Under-18 Select Team drops 4-1 contest; Game two tomorrow on USAHockeyTV

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team topped Canada, 4-1, in the opening game of the Collegiate Series at the Lake Placid Olympic Center on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team dropped a hard-fought contest against their Canadian counterparts, 4-1, in the first game of the Under-18 Select Series.

Both teams return to action tomorrow (Aug. 14) for the second game of the series, with the U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team facing off against Canada at 2:30 p.m. ET and the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team taking to the ice at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Team USA opened the game’s scoring 6:21 into the first period. Rose Dwyer (Wynnewood, Pa.) released a shot from the point that deflected off a Canadian stick right to Ava Lindsay (Minnetonka, Minn.) who tapped it five hole for the first goal of the game. 

Sydney Morrow (Darien, Conn.) doubled the U.S. lead with just under nine minutes left in the second. The defender ripped a shot from just inside the blue line that bounced past the Canadian netminder to open a 2-0 lead on the power play. 

Less than a minute later, Laney Potter (Cranberry Township, Pa.) jumped on a rebound from the high slot, picking the top corner for Team USA’s third goal of the afternoon. With 2:25 remaining in the period, Canada scored its first after Claire Murdoch cleaned up a rebound right outside the crease. 

With Canada’s net empty, Cassie Hall (South Lyon, Mich.) notched a goal, giving the U.S. the decisive 4-1 lead. Annelies Bergmann (Troy, Mich.) made 21 saves in the winning effort in net. 

NOTES: Canada outshot the U.S., 22-21 … The U.S. was 1-2 on the power play, while Canada was 0-4.

Canada 4, U.S. Under-18 Select Team 1

The first game of the series was a spirited contest with the teams playing a physical and fast pace from the first puck drop. Canada opened a 1-0 lead when Adriana Milani tapped in a puck off the post with 13:24 remaining. Despite being down a goal, the teams were evenly matched in shots, with Canada holding a one-shot advantage, 9-8, to start the middle frame. 

Team USA knotted the game at 1-1 just 32 seconds into the second when Lindsay Stepnowski (South Glastonbury, Ct.) deked the goaltender to put home a wide-open tap in from Emily Pohl (Woodbury, Minn.).

In the final frame, Canada pulled away scoring two goals in the span of 1:49 midway through the period by Rachel Piggott and Aubrey Morrison. Megan Mossey added Canada’s fourth with 5:40 remaining in the game to pull away with a 4-1 advantage. 

Morgan Stickney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made 25 saves in net. 

NOTES: Canada outshot the U.S., 29-26 … The U.S. was 0-3 on the power play, while Canada was 0-3 as well.
