WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- The 2002 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team fell, 3-2, to Team Canada in the gold-medal contest of the XIX Olympic Winter Games to claim the silver medal.

Team Canada opened up the scoring at 1:45 of the first period when Caroline Ouellette tipped the bouncing puck past U.S. goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.).

Skating with the man-advantage, Katie King (Salem, N.H.) put Team USA on the board just under the two-minute mark of the second period, deflecting defenseman Tara Mounsey's (Concord, N.H.) high past Canadian netminder Kim St-Pierre. However, Canadian forward Hayley Wickenheiser picked up the go-to goal at 4:10, snagging the rebound and popping it past DeCosta. Jayna Hefford then charged in on the breakaway to close out the scoring for the stanza with just one second remaining for the eventual game-winner.

U.S. alternate captain Karyn Bye (River Falls, Wis.) was able to close the gap to 3-2 at 16:27 of the third period, firing in a shot from the point on the power play. Mounsey registered her second assist on the goal, with Jenny Potter (Eagan, Minn.) also assisting. However, Team Canada was able to hang on to the one-goal lead to claim its first Olympic gold medal.
