U.S. Olympic Womens Ice Hockey Team Blanks Germany, 10-0, In Olympic Opener

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- Eight different goal scorers led the U.S. Olympic Womens Ice Hockey Team to a 10-0 shutout of Team Germany in its first contest of the XIX Olympic Winter Games.

At 6:16 of the opening stanza, alternate captain Karyn Bye (River Falls, Wis.) first lit the lamp for Team USA off a pass from Jenny Potter (Eagan, Minn.), with defenseman Tara Mounsey(Concord, N.H.) also assisting. Forward Laurie Baker (Concord, Mass.) widened the gap to 2-0, wrapping behind the net and stuffing the puck past German netminder Stephanie Wartosch-Kurten at 15:05.

Forward Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn.) opened scoring in the second period, firing the puck to the short side of Wartosch-Kurten. Then the U.S. surged ahead offensively, notching three goals in a minute and a half. Darwitz and Bye each added a second goal, along with forwardChris Bailey (Marietta, N.Y.).

In the third period, newcomers Krissy Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Julie Chu(Fairfield, Conn.) each found the back of net, as did team captain and all-time leading U.S. scorer Cammi Granato (Downers Grove, Ill.). Forward A.J. Mleczko (Nantucket, Mass.) then put the puck past German goaltender Esther Thyssen at 15:09 to seal the 10-0 victory. U.S. goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) earned the shutout in net.

The U.S. Olympic Womens Ice Hockey Team next faces Team China on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 4:00 p.m. (MST) at The Peaks Arena in Provo, Utah. Team USA holds a15-0-0 all-time record versus China.
