Gameday: USA vs Russia - Live Coverage

Team USA takes on Russia in the quarterfinals and all of your live game coverage is on this page. The puck drops at 6 a.m. ET.

The U.S. faces Russia at Malmo Isstadion (capacity: 5,140) in the quarterfinals of the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship. Today’s winner faces the winner of Sweden/Slovakia in the semifinals on Saturday (Jan. 4).

Team USA finished Group A in second place with a record of 3-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L). Russia (2-0-0-2) placed third in Group B, beating Norway (11-0) and Switzerland (7-1) before losing to Finland (4-1) and Sweden (3-2).

At the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, Team USA won the gold medal, while Russia earned the bronze medal.

TEAM USA IN THE PLAYOFFS

  • The playoff format was adopted for the IIHF World Junior Championship beginning in 1996. The U.S. has qualified for the playoffs 17 out of 19 years, including 14 of the last 15 tournaments. From 1977-95, teams played each other once in a round robin format and medals were awarded based on final standings.
  • The U.S. has won six of its last seven quarterfinal games and is 7-5 all-time in the round.
  • Team USA is 4-7 in semifinals, 2-5 in bronze medal games and 3-1 in gold medal games.

THE SERIES VS. RUSSIA

  • In last year’s tournament, Russia won a preliminary round meeting, 2-1.
  • Team USA’s last win was three games ago (3-2) on Dec. 29, 2007.
