CRIMMITSCHAU, GERMANY — The U.S. Under-17 Select Team topped Switzerland, 5-3, in its second game of the 2014 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament. Team USA (2-0-0-0, W-OTW-OTL-L) will face the Czech Republic tomorrow (Aug. 16) at 9 a.m. ET.

“Switzerland played well and really made us work for this one,” said Cary Eades, head coach of the U.S. Under-17 Select Team. “I like the way we responded to their goal in the second period. We didn’t get down or panic—we simply got back to work and scored on two pretty passing plays to build a 4-1 lead. The Swiss goalie (Matteo Ritz) was outstanding and kept us from building a safe lead.”

On a power play midway through the first period, Team USA got on the board when Ty Farmer (O’Fallon, Mo.) and Samuel Rossini (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) setup Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.) for the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, Rossini cashed in on a feed from Kailer Yamamoto (Spokane, Wash.), making it 2-0.

The Swiss struck first in the second period, cutting Team USA’s lead in half at 10:46.

However, the U.S. answered, again on the power play, with great puck movement from Yamamoto to Henry Crone (Cedar Hills, Texas) to Mark Senden (Medina, Minn.) for a 3-1 lead at 11:32. Fifteen seconds later, Bellows tipped in a shot from Derek Daschke (Troy, Mich.) for his second goal.

Not even a minute into the third stanza, the Swiss capitalized on a power play, making it 4-2.

Mitchell Mattson (Grand Rapids, Minn.) lengthened Team USA’s lead, 5-2, at 6:49.

Switzerland climbed within two goals midway through the third to close out the scoring.

The U.S. will go toe-to-toe with undefeated Czech Republic tomorrow (Aug. 16) at 9 a.m. ET. If offered, a live stream of the matchup will be available USAHockey.com. Also follow @USAHockeyScores for in-game updates. Play-by-play is available here.
