CALGARY , ALBERTA — The U.S. Women's Under-22 Select Team scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime and went on to a 3-2 shootout victory over Canada here today to complete a three-game sweep of the 2014 Under-22 Series.

Team USA captain Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal and was two-for-two in the shootout to lead the way offensively.

"Both sides played well and we got down a couple of goals but our players never quit on each other and mounted a nice comeback late in the game," said Ken Klee, head coach of the U.S. Women's Under-22 Select Team. "I was really proud of our team today and throughout the series."

After a scoreless first period, Canada scored on the power play at 13:14 of the second period and led 1-0 after 40 minutes. The U.S. had a number of chances in the middle stanza, but Canadian goaltender Ann-Rene Desbiens stopped all 12 shots by Team USA.

In the third, Canada extended its lead, 2-0, again on the power play, just more than seven minutes into the period.

The U.S. evened the contest in the waning moments. Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) was in front of the net to deflect a Lee Stecklein (Roseville, Minn.) point shot on the power play at 18:02 to cut Canada’s lead in half. Just 0:29 later, with goaltender Nicole Hensley (Lakewood, Colo.) pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Michelle Picard (Taunton, Mass.) shot from the blue line into a net-front scrum, and Carpenter picked the puck out and popped it over the goaltender’s shoulder to tie the game.

The five-minute, four-on-four overtime was scoreless, sending the game to a shootout.

Carpenter was key for the U.S. in the shootout, scoring in the bottom of the third round to force the shootout to continue. After both teams missed chances in the fourth round, Carpenter skated down the middle, deked to the left and sailed a forehand shot over the Desbien’s shoulder in the bottom of the fifth round for the win.

Hensley picked up the victory in goal for Team USA with 12 saves. The U.S. had a 29-14 shots on goal advantage in the contest.
