Canada scores back-to-back in final five minutes of game for win

KAMLOOPS, B.C. -- The U.S. Women’s National Team had a 32-21 shots-on-goal advantage, but dropped a 3-2 decision tonight against rival Canada in the second game of the 2014 Four Nations Cup for both teams. Canada scored goals 46 seconds apart in the last five minutes of the game to erase a 2-1 U.S. advantage and claim the victory.

The U.S. struck just 2:03 into the opening stanza to take an early lead. Emily Pfalzer (Getzville, N.Y./Boston College) picked the puck out of a net-front scrum, skated below the goal line and passed back out to Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Mich./University of Minnesota) who staked Team USA to its first of two leads in the contest.

Canada scored the first of its two power play goals with 9:37 left in the opening frame and the teams went to the locker room after 20 minutes even at 1-1.

Team USA got its own power play goal at 4:18 of the middle stanza when Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich./Quinnipiac University) converted the rebound from Monique Lamoureux’s (Grand Forks, N.D.) shot from the right point.

The U.S. maintained its 2-1 lead until late in the game. Canada’s Haley Irwin tied the score at 15:03, and 46 seconds later Rebecca Johnston scored on the power play for what proved to be the game-winner. Team USA had a power play opportunity in the final minute of play and Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) nearly tied the game, but her shot through traffic from the slot hit the left post.

Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis./University of Wisconsin) made 18 saves in the U.S. net, while Genevieve Lacasse had 30 stops for Canada.

Team USA faces Sweden Friday (Nov. 7) in its final preliminary round game. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. ET and the game can be seen live on
