U.S. Women's National Univ. Team Beats Kazakhstan in OT

Team USA Faces Host Country Spain in Final Matchup of Tournament on Friday (Feb. 13) at 7:30 a.m. ET

GRANADA, Spain—The U.S. Women’s National University Team overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Kazakhstan, 3-2, in overtime of its first relegation game of the 2015 Winter World University Games today. Katie Augustine (West Chester, Ohio/Miami University), Emily Ford (Glastonbury, Conn./University of Vermont) and Hayley Williams (Crete, Ill./Miami University) each scored to help Team USA secure the win. 

The game was scoreless until the final two minutes of the opening stanza, when Kazakhstan converted shorthanded to make it 1-0. Kazakhstan struck again in the opening six minutes of the second frame, extending its lead to two goals. The U.S. finally got on the board in the second half of the middle stanza when Augustine scored past Kazakhstan goaltender Aizhan Rauchanova with the help of Kaley Mooney (Pittsburgh, Pa./Miami University).

In the third period, Williams notched the game-tying goal with less than three minutes remaining. Then, midway through overtime, while on the power play, Ford notched the game-winner, giving Team USA the 3-2 victory.

The U.S. Women’s National University Team will play one more relegation game Friday (Feb. 13.) against host country Spain at 7:30 a.m. ET. It will be a rematch of Monday’s meeting between the two teams, which Team USA won by a 9-1 count.
