Kyle Zych (South Hadley, Mass.) scored but the U.S. Developmental Sled Hockey Team fell to Canada, 4-1, here today at the 2016 Defi Sportif at Howie Morenz Arena in Montreal, Quebec. The game was the first of a three-game series versus Canada.

“We had a decent start but just couldn't convert our chances,” said Mike MacMillan, head coach of the U.S. Developmental Sled Hockey Team. “That's the way it goes sometimes. There are two games left so it’s important we put this one behind us, refocus, and be ready to go tomorrow.”

The U.S. opened the scoring midway through the first period when Zych carried the puck into Canada’s zone and fired a wrist shot high past Canada’s goaltender, Tyson Rietveld. Team USA nearly extended its lead with a 5-on-3 power play late in the period but were unable to convert on the man-advantage.

Canada evened the score 3:56 into the middle frame when Stefano Tamburello snapped a wrist shot beneath the glove of Kyle Huckaby (Port Arthor, Texas). Branden Sison broke the tie with a breakaway tally at the 12:09 mark of the period to make it 2-1, Canada.

A goal by Aurelien Bucquet just 52 seconds into the final frame gave Canada a two-goal lead before Coalton Martin scored just over a minute later to account for the 4-1 final.

Huckaby, who started in goal for the U.S., finished with a pair of saves before being relieved by Griffin LaMarre (Haverhill, Mass.) with 12:49 remaining in the game. LaMarre stopped the only shot he faced.

The U.S. Developmental Sled Hockey Team returns to action tomorrow (April 30). Puck drop is set for 7:30pm ET and will be streamed live here.
