Frank Vatrano Added to 2016 U.S. Men's National Team

2016 IIHF Men's World Championship Begins Friday (May 6)


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Forward Frank Vatrano (Springfield, Mass./Boston Bruins/UMass-Amherst) has been added to the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team that will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Vatrano previously represented the United States at the 2012 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship in Brno and Znojmo, Czech Republic, where he helped Team USA claim the gold medal.

A member of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program for two seasons (2010-12), Vatrano began his first professional season with the Providence Bruins of the AHL before being recalled by the NHL's Boston Bruins and making his NHL debut on November 7, 2015. He finished the season with 55 points (36-19) in 36 games in Providence and another 11 points (8-3) in 39 games with Boston.

Prior to making his professional debut in 2015-16, Vatrano spent a season with UMass-Amherst where he collected 28 points (18-10) in 36 games.

The U.S. Men's National Team now includes 13 forwards, seven defensemen and three goaltenders.

NOTES: John Hynes (New Jersey Devils) is serving as head coach of the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team ... Of the current 23 players on the U.S. Men's National Team roster, 15 are alumni of the United States Hockey League, the only Tier I junior league in the United States; six spent time in the North American Hockey League, the only Tier II junior league in the U.S.; 19 have competed at the NCAA Division I level; and 15 played for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program ... The staff and players of the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team are selected by the U.S. Men's National Team Advisory Group, led by Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. Other members include Stan Bowman (Chicago Blackhawks), Dean Lombardi (Los Angeles Kings), David Poile (Nashville Predators), RayShero (New Jersey Devils), Dale Tallon (Florida Panthers) and Don Waddell (Carolina Hurricanes). In addition, Chris Drury (New York Rangers) will serve as a member of the management group for the 2016 U.S. Men's National Team ... The 2016 IIHF Men's World Championship will include teams from 16 nations, split into two groups of eight. Teams will play a round-robin format within their group and the top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The U.S. will play its seven preliminary round games in St. Petersburg at Yubileiny Arena … USA Hockey's international council, chaired by Gavin Regan (Potsdam, N.Y.), has oversight responsibilities for all U.S. national teams.
