Finding Early Chemistry: It didn’t take long for Orange forwards Samuel Stevens (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Ryan Savage (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to find chemistry with one another as the pair connected for three goals in the opening game of the tournament. Stevens led the way for Orange with four points (2G, 2A), while Savage wasn’t far behind with three points (2G, 1A).  The duo spearheaded Orange to a tournament-opening 7-3 win over Black.

First Shootout: In just the second game of the tournament, we had our first shootout, as Red edged out Royal. The goalies reigned supreme for most of the shootout as nine of the 10 chances were stopped by Nicholas Grabko (Channahon, Ill., Red) and Zachary Borgiel (Fort Gratiot, Mich., Royal). The lone shootout goal belonged to Max Kouznetsov (Voorhees, N.J.) to give Red the victory.

Pitching a Shutout: Kelly goaltenders Trent Burnham (Eagle River, Ark,) and Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) combined to make 35 saves to propel Kelly to the first shutout victory of the tournament, a 4-0 victory over Gray. Burnham made 14 saves in the first half and DeRidder followed with 21 saves in the second half to complete the shutout.

NHL Bloodlines: There are plenty of NHL bloodlines sprinkled into this Select 16 Development Camp. Cole Krygier (Novi, Mich., Forest) is the son of former NHLer Todd Krygier, Trevor Peca (Clarence, N.Y., Royal) is the son of Michael Peca, Philippe Lapointe (Hinsdale, Ill., Kelly) is the son of two-time Stanley Cup champion Martin Lapointe, Jack Barnes (Dallas, Tex.) is the son of Stu Barnes and Ryan Savage (Scottsdale, Ariz., Orange) is the son of Brian Savage.

Late Game Heroics: White and Forest battled to the wire in the finale of Saturday’s games. Trailing 2-1 in the final minute, White forward James Wiseman (Haymarket, Virg.) tallied a goal with 00:21 remaining to tie to the game at 2. White prevailed in the eventual shootout as goaltender Jack Faulkner (Omaha, Neb.) made four stops. Faulkner also stopped all 20 of the shots he faced in his 25 minutes of action.
