GAMEDAY: USA & Canada Women Clash for U18 Gold

Team USA Looks to Defend Title; Watch at 1 p.m. ET at u18worldwomen2017.iihf.com

GAME DAY: The 2017 U.S. Women’s National Under-18 Team will play Canada today at 1 p.m. ET in the gold medal game. The match-up will be streamed live at u18worldwomen2017.iihf.com.The U.S. finished the preliminary round in second place in Group A to advance directly to the semifinal round where it beat Russia, 6-0, yesterday to earn a spot in the gold medal game.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY: The U.S. and Canada have gone head-to-head in the gold-medal game every year since the tournament’s inception in 2008. Team USA has defeated Canada in the gold-medal game the last two years with matching 3-2 overtime victories. The U.S. holds a 2-3-2-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) edge in gold medal games.

USA vs. CANADA: The U.S. and Canada are meeting for the thirteenth time at the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship. Team USA holds a 3-4-3-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record against Canada with the last meeting taking place on Tuesday. The U.S. lost, 1-0, in an overtime thriller. The U.S. has outscored Canada, 31-28 overall.

THE LEADER BOARD: After four games, 15 players have at least one point in the tournament and Cayla Barnes leads Team USA and is tied for first overall with six points (3-3). Along with Grace Zumwinkle and Natalie Heising, she is tied for second overall with three goals. Heising is tied for fourth in the tournament with five points (3-2) while Zumwinkle (3-1) and Taylor Wente (2-2) are tied for seventh overall with four points. Barnes and Clair DeGeorge share second overall with three assists. Natalie Buchbinder and Allyson Simpson are tied for second in the tourney with a plus-5 rating. Barnes leads all defensemen with three assists and six points. She is also tied for first with three goals among defenders.

THE PUCK STOPS HERE: Lindsay Reed has a pair of shutouts, stopping all 29 shots she has faced. Alex Gulstene has stopped 43 of 45 shots in two games at the 2017 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship.
