The 2017 IIHF Women’s World Championship has marked the return of forward Amanda Kessel (Madison, Wis.) and defenseman Gigi Marvin (Warroad, Minn.) as both players have missed significant time with various injuries over the course of recent competition. Both players recently sat down to discuss returning to Team USA for this major event on home ice.

While Kessel did play for the U.S. in a pair of exhibition games against Canada this past December, she’s extremely excited to be competing this week in what is her first international tournament since the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

“It’s amazing because it’s something at one point I didn’t know if I would be able to do again,” said Kessel, who’s amassed four points (1-3) in three games here at the world championship. “I’m really soaking in every second here.”

Marvin, who is representing Team USA for the first time since the 2015 Four Nations Cup in Sundsvall, Sweden, continues to be appreciative of the endless support she received while sidelined.

“Injuries are tough but a ton of support from my teammates, friends and family helped me persevere through it,” said Marvin, who scored a third-period goal against Canada in her first game back. “It’s just been a blast and it's always a blessing to put the red, white and blue on and play with these amazing women.”
