GAMEDAY: USA vs. Finland in Quarterfinals at 10:15 a.m. ET

COLOGNE, Germany – With the preliminary round now in the rear-view mirror, it all starts “for real” here at the 2017 IIHF Men’s World Championship with quarterfinal games. Team USA, winner of Group A, faces Finland, which finished fourth in Group B, here at 4:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET). Fans in the U.S. can watch the game live on NBCSN (live stream on NBC Sports app and at NBCSports.com).

Team USA brings a six-game winning streak into play today and the victor today will earn a spot in Saturday’s (May 20) semifinals, while the loser will go home.

The U.S. is in the quarterfinal round of the world championship for the seventh straight year and will play Finland for the sixth time ever in quarterfinal play. In the five previous meetings -- four of the five decided by a single goal and the other by two goals -- Finland has won four times. The last quarterfinal game between the two teams came in 2012 when the Finns scored twice in the final 7:00, including with :09 left in regulation, to gain a 3-2 victory. There was just one penalty in the game (against the U.S. in the second period).

NOTES: Johnny Gaudreau and Anders Lee both have six-game point streaks coming into play today … Dylan Larkin has points in six of the seven games in the world championship … Anders Lee has scored five goals in the tournament, all on the power play … Team USA is the home team today and will wear its white jersey. The U.S. is 5-0-0-0 wearing white … The U.S. and Finland met in the last year’s world championship in the preliminary round with the Finns gaining a 3-2 decision. The U.S. has won five the last seven games in the series.

THE U.S. IN QUARTERFINAL GAMES -- Quarterfinal games have been played in the IIHF World Championship since 1992 with the exception of 1997, 1998, and 1999. Of the 22 years quarterfinals have been played, the U.S. has qualified for the quarterfinal game all but twice. Team USA is 8-12-0 in 20 previous quarterfinal games. A breakdown is below.
