AMHERST, N.Y. – Between games on a daily basis, plus meetings, team activities and a number of practices sprinkled in, it’s been a busy week for the 180 invitees to the 2017 USA Hockey Boys Select 17 Player Development Camp. Today marked the last full day for those in attendance with another set of five entertaining games.

Day 5 kicked off with Team Forest and Team Gold going head-to-head. Team Forest cashed in on an early power-play opportunity thanks to precise passing and players moving without the puck. Dante Moretti (Columbus, Ohio) was the beneficiary, finishing a cross-ice pass from Ryan O’Reilly (Southlake, Texas) to make it 1-0.

Team Forest continued to ride the early momentum when Max Sasson (Birmingham, Mich.) was rewarded for going to the high-traffic front of the net as a rebound landed right on his tape for an easy tap-in to make it 2-0.

Team Gold attempted to claw back in the game with a deflected puck that found the back of the net from Declan Carlile (Flushing, Mich.), but Team Forest countered just a few minutes later to put the game out of reach, eventually winning 3-2. For Team Forest, it was a fourth-straight victory after opening the camp with a 3-1 loss to Team White.

Speaking of Team White, it dominated early and often today, capitalizing on turnovers and using excellent puck movement to build a 4-1 lead in the early minutes of the second half, but two goals in the final 10 minutes pulled Team Black to within one goal. Black then pulled its goaltender in search of the equalizer, generating a flurry of chances, but White goaltender Jacob Mucitelli (Deerfield, N.Y.) kept turning them away. Kyle Haskins (Huntington, Vt.) eventually added his camp-leading sixth goal by burying an empty netter after intercepting a pass at the opposing blue line, icing the game, 5-3.

Haskins (6G, 3A) and Sammy Renlund (2G, 7A) from Team Red, both ended the week with nine points, a camp-high. Following Haskins and Renlund were Team Orange members Blake McLaughlin (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Philippe LaPointe (Burr Ridge, Ill.) who both had eight points.

The remaining three games on the evening saw Team Orange beat Team Royal 4-3, Team Kelly defeat Team Red 7-4, and Team Grey top Team Columbia 5-2.

For Team Kelly, they ended the camp with the most team points by amassing 13 with a record of 4-0-0-1. They also led the camp with 23 goals, despite only having two scorers (Adam Robbins and Noah Prokop) in the top 13 leaders in points.

On the goaltending leaders side, Isaiah Saville (.944), Blake Pietila (.929) and Benjamin Kraws (.924) finished the week as the top 3 in save percentage. Mason Palmer (Atlanta, Ga.) of Team Forest saw the most action of the week as he led the camp in shots on goal and saves with 78 and 71, respectively.

The Boys Select 17 Camp will conclude tomorrow with the camp all-star game.  Rosters will be announced tomorrow prior to the game. Stay tuned to TeamUSA.USAHockey.com for the announcement.
