AMHERST, N.Y. – One of the loneliest places in the game of hockey is the penalty box. Just you and your thoughts, replaying the infraction you’ve just committed over and over. The only thing you can do is look through the glass and hope your team can keep it together until you’re set free and play even harder on the next shift.

For Team Royal, it was a penchant for penalties that ultimately became its undoing in a 7-4 loss to Team Grey on the fourth day of USA Hockey’s Boys Select 16 Player Development Camps.

Team Royal was whistled for 10 penalties in all and Team Grey pounced on the power-play opportunities. The first three Grey goals scored all came with the man-advantage. Team Grey added four more even-strength goals, including two from Ryan Sorkin (Chicago, Ill.) to earn its second victory of the week.

In our second game of the day, penalties also played a big role in the outcome, but it was how Team Kelly responded while shorthanded that helped propel the squad to a 4-2 win over Team Gold.

Team Kelly committed nine penalties on the day and Team Gold scored on two of its first three power-play opportunities. But quick-response goals by Leo Bacallao (Madison, Wis.) shortly after each of Team Gold’s power-play goals negated the penalties taken by his Team Kelly teammates.

Six more power-play opportunities came Team Gold’s way, but Team Kelly tightened its penalty kill, not allowing another power-play goal or any other kind of goal the remainder of the game. Bacallao eventually added his third goal to complete the hat trick with 13:08 remaining second half, and that ultimately proved to be the game-winner. An empty-net goal sealed the deal for Team Kelly’s first win of the week.

Game 3 produced a high-scoring affair that saw Team White defeat Team Columbia, 8-6, despite Team Columbia posting five first-half goals. For Team White, goaltender Jack Williams (St. Louis, Mo.) played the second half and helped smother the Team Columbia offense that was so prolific in the first half. Williams showed great rebound control and was often in good position to help stifle Team Columbia.

Nick Capone (East Haven, Conn.) of Team White followed Bacallao’s suit as he also registered a hat trick. The three goals on the day for Capone were his first points of the week.

In Game 4, the lone undefeated team – Orange – met the camp’s save-percentage leader in Team Forest goaltender Kyle Chauvette (New Boston, N.H.). After a four-goal first half for Team Orange, Chauvette entered the game for the second half and locked down the Orange attack, allowing a lone goal from Ben Troumbly (Bovey, Minn.) who forced a turnover and sniped a wrist shot over Chauvette’s left shoulder. Nonetheless, Team Orange remained undefeated with a 6-2 triumph.

The evening’s final game ended in a 4-2 victory for Team Black over Team Red. Arthur Kaliyev (Staten Island, N.Y.) paced the Team Black attack with the third hat trick of the day.

Tomorrow will be the last full day of games before the all-star game takes place on Thursday. Team Forest and Team Gold will be the first matchup of the day and faceoff is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. ET.
