AMHERST, N.Y. – All five games at the USA Hockey Boys Select 16 Player Development Camp took on a different look today as they were played on an Olympic-sized sheet of ice. Playing on the larger sheet allowed USA Hockey coaches and staff a glimpse at what these players could do if selected to participate in the Five Nations Tournament, which will be played on a 200-by-100 surface.

But first things first, the players had to get through the last day of games.

The larger sheet features a longer neutral zone, more room between the faceoff circle and the boards, and a shorter defensive zone. This means goaltenders are looking at shots from different angles and defensemen have to play a careful game.

In Game 1, Team Forest continue to ride hot goaltending in a 3-0 win over Team Gold. Goaltender Kyle Chauvette (New Boston, N.H.) continued his impressive play, stopping 12 of 12 shots in the first half of play. Displaying composure and good rebound control, Chauvette finished camp as the leader in save percentage (.955) and goals-against average (1.44).

Hunter Robbins (Pitcairn, Pa.) relieved Chauvette in the second half and blanked Team Gold, stopping 15 shots to give Team Forest its first shutout of the week.

The day’s second matchup pitted Team Black against Team White. After a scoreless first half, Arthur Kaliyev (Staten Island, N.Y.) opened the scoring for Team Black with his camp-leading sixth goal of the week. The six goals scored by Kaliyev would have also been the most in camp at last year’s Select 16 Player Development Camp.

The two teams then traded goals toward the middle portion of the half, leaving Team Black with a 2-1 lead entering the final minutes. Team White’s Ryan Johnson (Irvine, Calif.), however, knotted the game at 2-2 with 5:06 remaining.

With under a minute remaining, the game looked destined for a shootout until Frank Ireland V (Easton, Mass.) used the extra space alongside the boards to enter the zone before throwing a tape-to-tape pass in the slot to Grant Silianoff (Edina, Minn.) with 21 seconds remaining. Silianoff had the wherewithal to finish and in doing so gave Team White the 3-2 come-from-behind victory.

The third game of the day featured an undefeated squad – Team Orange – taking on a team that had yet to win a game this week, Team Royal.

Team Orange jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime thanks to goals from Trevor Kuntar (Williamsville, N.Y.), Everest Schneider (San Antonio, Texas) and Henry Wagner (University City, Mo.). Controlling the pace of play and limiting their opponents’ scoring chances, it seemed Team Orange would cruise to its fifth victory of the week. But Team Royal had other ideas. Coming back from the halftime break, Team Royal launched an offensive outburst with four goals in the first six and a half minutes, taking the lead at 4-3.

Royal continued its physical play and aggressive forechecking en route to two more goals, for a total of six unanswered, and its first camp victory.

The evening’s final games matched Team Kelly and Team Red with the verdant squad winning 8-6 in a barnburner over Red. In the other finale, Team Columbia beat Team Grey 4-2.

Camp will conclude tomorrow with the all-star game, which will take place at 10 a.m. ET. Stay tuned to TeamUSA.USAHockey.com for the announcement of rosters shortly before the game.
