AMHERST, N.Y. – Outside it was 80 degrees and humid, but inside the Northtown Center, conditions were just right for hockey as the Boys Select 15 Player Development Camp dropped the puck on its first day of game action after a Saturday filled with practices. Six games were on the docket Sunday, with Team Black and Team Gold meeting in the camp opener at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Team Black 4, Team Gold 3 (shootout)

Ben Steeves (Bedford, N.H.) scored once in regulation and added the only shootout goal for either team in Team Black’s 4-3 win over Team Gold.

After a scoreless first half, the teams alternated goals in the second stanza beginning with Colorado Springs native Dylan Robinson’s first goal of the tournament from Chase Bradley (St. Louis, Mo.) and Tanner Kelly (Clarkston, Mich.) to give Black a 1-0 lead. Team Gold’s Kyle Furey (Marblehead, Mass.) eventually scored the equalizer, but Steeves rebuilt the Team Black lead three minutes after Furey’s goal, setting up a back-and-forth finish highlighted by Matthew DeBoer’s shorthanded goal to tie the game for Team Gold late in the second half.

Deadlocked after two halves, the teams settled the duel in a shootout, with Team Black goaltender Owen Hains stopping all five Gold shooters and Steeves beating Team Gold goaltender Drew Commesso with the fifth and final shot. It was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect first appearance for Commesso, who stopped all 15 shots he faced in regulation. Opposing Commesso, Team Black’s starting goaltender Michael Delehanty stopped all 19 shots he faced in regulation.

Team Teal 3, Team Red 2

Despite going scoreless on six power-play opportunities, Team Teal skated to a 3-2 win over Team Red thanks to a big day from Ty Smilanic (Elizabeth, Colo.).

A Colorado Thunderbirds forward, Smilanic opened the scoring early in the first half, then added assists on a pair of Teal goals midway through the second half to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory. Smilanic’s second assist helped Noah Tussey (Stillwater, Minn.) score what proved to be the game-winning goal for Team Teal.

A pair of Michiganders, Victor Mancini (Saginaw, Mich.) and Tiernan Shoudy (Marysville, Mich), scored goals for Team Red.

Team Columbia Blue 2, Team Kelly Green 3

Buoyed by a pair of power-play goals, Team Kelly Green skated past Team Columbia Blue, 3-2, despite a pair of goals from Thomas Weis (Verona, Wis.).

Carter Mazur (Jackson, Mich.) tallied the first power-play goal, giving Kelly Green an early lead midway through the first half, and then Weis scored late in the half to knot the score at 1-1. Weis struck again two minutes into the second stanza, but then Blake Biondi (Hermantown, Minn.) and David Nesburg (Faribault, Minn.) responded for Kelly Green. Nesburg’s power-play goal, coming with nine minutes remaining, stood as the game-winner thanks to a solid performance in goal from Connor Bradford (Kingston, Mass.), who stopped 16 of 17 shots.

Team Navy Blue 1, Team White 4

Team White jumped out to a two-goal lead and never looked back in a 4-1 triumph over Team Navy Blue. Defenseman Christian Jimenez (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the way, scoring twice for White, while Nicholas DeSantis (Collegeville, Pa.) added three assists. Jack Williams (Biddeford, Maine) scored the lone goal for Team Navy Blue.

The Team White goaltending duo of Hunter Mitchell (Phoenix, Arizona) and Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) combined for the victory.

Team Forest Green 1, Team Orange 5

Team Orange rode a three-goal first half to cruise past Team Forest Green 5-1.

Tanner Latsch (Twin Lake, Mich.) and David Andreychuk (Chatham, N.J.) scored twice for Orange, which also received a goal from defenseman Thomas Messineo (Westwood, Mass.). Jake Waterman (Warwick, R.I.) scored the lone goal for Forest Green.

Youth hockey forward-turned-goaltender Xavier Medina (Wayne, Mich), who starred at USA Hockey’s Youth Nationals in April, stopped 13 of 14 in goal for Team Orange before giving way to Aidan Campbell (Cranberry Township, Pa.) who was a perfect 20 for 20.

Team Royal Blue 4, Team Grey 5

The day’s final contest needed a shootout to decide the winner after a 4-4 regulation tie between Team Royal Blue and Team Grey. In the extra session, Team Royal’s Zackary Tonelli (Amonk, N.Y.) applied some early pressure, scoring on the first shot, but Alexander Servagno (Gibsonia, Pa.) answered as the second shooter for Team Grey. Then, after goaltender Cullen Deyoung (Canton, Mich.) stopped Royal’s Lucas Hamp (Lakeland, Minn.), Mackie Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Conn.) scored a bar-down beauty on the backhand to give Grey the advantage. Unfazed, Royal’s Hunter Berry (Colleyville, Texas) zipped a wrister past Deyoung to even the count at two goals each. After one more failed attempt for each team, Team Grey’s Casey Roepke (Hartford, Wis.) skated in as the potential final shooter and scored with a wrist shot to win it 5-4 (3-2 in shootout goals) for Grey.

Jackson Kocur (Saginaw, Mich.) scored twice in the final six minutes of regulation for Royal Blue to erase a two-goal deficit and force the extra session.
