The United States Under-17 Men's Select Team scored eight unanswered goals to top Switzerland 8-1 today in its opening game at the 2017 Five Nations Tournament.

“It was a great first start for our guys,” said U.S. head coach Pat Ferschweiler (Rochester, Minn.). “We had a goal of getting better every shift. From last game to this game, first period to third, I saw lots of improvement. We came together as a team and most importantly, we competed.”

Switzerland opened the scoring 8:42 into the game before the U.S. responded with a pair of first-period goals. Arthur Kaliyev (Staten Island, N.Y.) netted the equalizer, scoring at 12:47 to make it 1-1, then Grant Silianoff (Edina, Minn.) fired a shot short side high past the Swiss goaltender to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead entering the first intermission.

Team USA then began a five-goal second-period barrage just 34 seconds into the middle frame, as Robert Mastrosimone (East Islip, N.Y.) went high blocker on a two- on- one rush. Next on the scoresheet was Jake Hale (Minneapolis Minn.), who converted a feed from Mitch Miller (Sylvania, Ohio), giving the U.S. a 4-1 lead. Miller then ripped one high blocker, increasing the lead to 5-1 with 9:28 remaining in the second. Slightly more than two minutes later, Robert Christy (Saint Paul, Minn.) banged home a rebound off a Robert Griffin (Burlington, Mass.) shot. Josh Groll (San Diego, Calif.) then slid one far side to give the U.S. a 7-1 advantage entering the final period.

Goaltender Kyle Chauvette (New Boston, N.H.) went between the pipes for the U.S. at the start of the third stanza, relieving Ethan Haider (Maple Grove, Minn.), who started in goal and stopped 15 of 16 Swiss shots. Chauvette stopped all nine shots he faced, and with 3:38 remaining in the game, Groll scored his second goal of the game to give Team USA its final 8-1 victory margin.

The U.S. (1-0) will meet Slovakia tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. local time / 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time in the teams’ second game of pool play. That game will be played in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and will be live streamed here.
