Misiewicz scores three goals as Team USA shuts out Italy, 6-0, in title game

TURIN, Italy — Josh Misiewicz (La Grange, Ill.) scored three goals and Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.) added a pair of tallies to help the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team capture the 2018 Turin Para Ice Hockey International Tournament with a 6-0 shutout win over host Italy.

“It’s always fun to win,” said Guy Gosselin, head coach of the 2017-18 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team. “As a whole, we accomplished everything we wanted to both on and off the ice here in Italy. Now, we’ll go back to Chicago and rest up before we turn our focus to the Border Series with Canada in February and, ultimately, the Paralympics in March.”

The United States went a perfect 5-0 in tournament play while not allowing a single goal in tournament play. The victory marked the team’s eighth international championship in its last nine events dating back to the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Misiewicz opened the scoring 3:08 into the game. The play started when a clearing attempt by Italy was intercepted near the blue line by Tyler Carron (Fort Collins, Colo.), who was able to corral the puck and find Misiewicz to the right of the goal for the game’s opening goal.

Farmer doubled the U.S. lead 2:24 later when his left-handed shot from the right side of the slot beat Italian goaltender Santino Stillitano in the top right corner.

Team USA struck again at the 7:38 mark when Kevin McKee (Chicago, Ill.) collected a pass from Misiewicz and saw his shot near the right faceoff dot go wide and bounce off the end-boards where Misiewicz was able to tap the puck into an empty net.

Roybal made it 4-0 for the U.S. with 2:02 to play in the game’s opening stanza. After Misiewicz stole the puck at the U.S. blue line, he carried the puck into the Italian zone and drew a defender toward him before cutting the puck back and sending a centering pass to Roybal who skated in uncontested before lifting a shot up over an outstretched Stillitano.

In the middle stanza, Farmer tallied his second of the game at the 6:31 mark when he collected the puck in the U.S. zone and skated the length of the ice before deking Italy’s goaltender, Gabriele Araudo, and tucking a shot under the right crossbar.

Misiewicz netted his third goal of the game with 5:38 to play in the frame by skating down the right wall, cutting towards the net and firing a shot into the top of the net to complete his hat trick.

Neither team was able to convert in the final period as Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) turned aside all four shots he faced.
