Kinkaid collects shutout win with 20 saves

HERNING, Denmark --  Keith Kinkaid (Farmingville, N.Y.) made 20 saves and three U.S. players recorded a goal and an assist as the 2018 U.S. Men's National Team earned a 4-0 victory over Denmark here tonight in its second preliminary round game of the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship.

“I thought the crowd was tremendous and rewarded by a hard-fought game by both teams,” said Jeff Blashill, head coach of the 2018 U.S. Men’s National Team. “As a team, we’ve really enjoyed our time here so far and credit to the Danish Federation and the city of Herning for all their hard work. We’ll enjoy a day off tomorrow as we turn our attention to Monday’s game against Germany.”

The U.S. (1-1-0-0/W-OTW-OTL-L) will return to action Monday (May 7) against Germany at 4:15 p.m. local time/10:15 a.m. ET. That game, along with all U.S. Men's World Championship games, will be broadcast live on NHL Network.

Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities through the opening 10 minutes of the game, but neither team was able to convert. Team USA’s best chance in that span came 7:52 into play when Blake Coleman (Plano, Texas) and Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.) combined for a scoring opportunity that created a net-front scramble before the puck was covered by Denmark’s Frederick Anderson.

Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis.) broke through for the U.S. with 3:54 left in the frame. After a turnover in the neutral zone saw the U.S. gain possession, Johnny Gaudreau (Salem, N.J.) carried the puck across the blue line and towards the net before it was pushed over to Butcher’s stick who tucked a wrist shot into the top left corner.

Team USA doubled its lead just 2:42 into the middle frame when Chris Kreider (Boxford, Mass.) connected on the power play. The power-play goal came when a slap shot at the blue line by Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) was deflected by Derek Ryan (Spokane, Wash.) before being redirected again by Kreider.

Cam Atkinson (Riverside, Conn.) increased the U.S. lead 9:14 into the second when he put home his own rebound off an initial pass from Kreider.

Kinkaid kept Denmark scoreless in the final moments of the second with a diving save to keep it 3-0 entering the final frame.

In the final period of play, Nick Jensen (St. Paul, Minn.) closed out the scoring with 5:49 remaining when he redirected a shot from Butcher in the slot to account fo the 4-0 final.
