U.S. Meets Norway in Final Prelim Game Sunday (May 13) at 10:15 a.m. ET

HERNING, Denmark -- Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Charlie McAvoy (Long Beach, N.Y.) each registered five points and 15 others added at least one point as the 2018 U.S. Men's National Team earned a 13-1 victory over Korea in preliminary round play of the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship.

“We saw contributions from all four lines tonight and now find ourselves in a good spot after five games,” said Jeff Blashill, head coach of the 2018 U.S. Men’s National Team. “The most important game is the next one, so we’ll look to continue improving as we get set for Norway.”

The United States (3-2-0-0/W-OTW-OTL-L) is back in acton Sunday (May 13) when it takes on Norway. Puck drop is set for 4:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) live on NHL Network.

Korea opened the scoring when Jin Hui Ahn converted a rebound attempt on the power play 5:23 into the game.

Anders Lee (Edina, Minn.) evened the score 3:02 later when he batted home a bouncing puck off an initial pass from Dylan Larkin (Waterford, Mich.). Johnny Gaudreau (Salem, N.J.) started the play by dishing the puck to Larkin, who skated in on goal before finding Lee in the slot whose first effort bounced up before he was able to bat a second try into goal.

Kane doubled Team USA’s lead with 7:04 left in the period when he took a pass and fired a wrist shot into the top right corner. Just 33 seconds later, McAvoy netted his first of the game when Kane found him at the left hashmark for a one-timer goal.

With 44 seconds to play in the opening period, McAvoy notched his second of the game off assists from Chris Kreider (Boxford, Mass.) and Larkin to bring the score to 4-1 entering the first intermission.

The middle frame saw the U.S. extend its lead to 8-1 with a four-goal effort. Derek Ryan (Spokane, Wash.) opened the scoring shorthanded 3:42 into the frame. Less than four minutes later, Blake Coleman (Plano, Texas) beat Dalton with a wrist shot from the slot before Kane tallied his second power-play goal of the game 1:35 later. Cam Atkinson (Riverside, Conn.) accounted for the final U.S. goal of the frame by beating Korea’s netminder Sungje Park with another power-play goal with 7:42 to play in the period.

The United States connected five more times in the third period to bring the final score to 13-1. Tage Thompson (Milford, Conn.) connected 5:09 into the frame before Atkinson tallied his second of the night 1:05 later. After Neal Pionk (Hermantown, Minn.) scored near the midway point of the period, Ryan converted on the power play with 8:20 to play. With 1:10 remaining in regulation, Sonny Milano (Massapequa, N.Y.) redirected Team USA’s final goal of the game.

Scott Darling (Lemont, Ill.) finished with 12 saves on 13 shots to account for the win.
