Team Red and Team Blue notch opening-day victories

Team Red 7, Team White 2 – Selects Academy forward Kiara Zanon (Fairport, N.Y.) broke a 2-2 tie with two first-period goals in a span of 2:20 that boosted Team Red past Team White 7-2 in the opening game of today’s USA Hockey Girls Under-18 Select Player Development Camp.

Sydney Breza (Mound, Minn.), who helped Shattuck-St. Mary’s win a USA Hockey Girls Tier I 19U national championship two months ago, also scored twice for Team Red. U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team gold medalist Dominique Petrie (Beverly Hills, Calif.) added a goal and two assists. Mya Neugent (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored the lone goals for Team White.

Team Blue 3, Team Gold 2 – Jenna Donohue (South Salem, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal five minutes into the third period to lift Team Blue over Team Gold 3-2 in Sunday’s second game at the Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford, Maine.

It was Donohue’s second point of the game, her first coming on a second-period assist that Lacey Eden (Annapolis, Md.) converted to give Team Blue a 2-1 lead. That margin held until a mere three seconds into the third period, when U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team gold medalist Sydney Shearen (Hugo, Minn.) scored the equalizer for Team Gold. But thanks to Donohue’s retort and 29 combined saves from goalies Natalie Ferenc (Orchard Lake, Mich.) and Jennifer Olnowich (Madison, N.J.), Team Blue skated off with the opening-day victory.
