Two combined shutouts highlight first day of games

Games began today at the 2018 Girls 15 Player Development Camp. The camp is being hosted this week by St. Cloud State University at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

LEADING THE WAY: Gretchen Branton of Team Gold, McAllister Dixon of Team Royal, and Hannah Partigianoni of Team Light Blue were the camp’s first day scoring leaders with three points apiece.

SHUTOUT SEASON: Team Royal Blue was victorious on Sunday, defeating Team Black 3-0. The goalie tandem of Hannah Skavnak and Paige Taborski combined for the shutout with 20 saves. Meanwhile, Team Teal blanked Team Gray 2-0 with goaltenders Morgan Varner and Jillian Wexler combining for 10 saves and the shutout.

EXTRACURRICULARS: Many campers this week have talents that go beyond the ice. Sophia O’Brien of Team Purple has the ability to juggle while riding a unicycle and has been invited to work with a circus group. On the other hand, Mary Rachel Lenaeus of Team Gold completed 2,016 miles of exercise with her mother in 2016.  She recently finished fourth amongst all women and first in her age group in a race up Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

FAMILY TIES: Team Red’s Cate Gallagher has a grandfather who coached noted USA Olympic goaltender Jim Craig. Meanwhile, fellow Team Red member Hanna Baskin’s brother Erik played college hockey for the Air Force Academy and was an assistant captain his senior year.

The camp will have a practice day on Monday, July 9 before the teams return to action with games on Tuesday, July 10 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
