Five Nations Head Coach Mark Dennehy set the standard for camp early this week

ONE, TWO, THREE...WE WANT FOUR: At the conclusion of the Select 16 camp, approximately 20 of the participating players will be chosen for the 2018 Under-17 Select Team that will compete against Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic in the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament from August 15-19 in Piestany, Slovakia.  Team USA will seek to extend its streak to four consecutive first-place finishes this year.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: Nate Boak (Canton, N.Y. – July 12) and Brendan Poshak (Green Bay, Wis. – July 13) are both celebrating their 16th birthdays during this week’s camp.

NHL BLOODLINES: Team Columbia forward Jackson Nieuwendyk (Dallas, TX) is the son of former NHL star, Joe Nieuwendyk.  The elder Nieuwendyk enjoyed a 20-year NHL career, recording 1,126 points (564G, 562A) over 1,257 games before retiring in 2006 as one of only 11 players in league history to win the Stanley Cup with three or more different teams – Calgary, Dallas and New Jersey.  The six-foot-two-inch center also earned numerous individual accolades throughout his illustrious career, including the Calder Memorial Trophy (1987-88), King Clancy Memorial Trophy (1994-95) and Conn Smythe Trophy (1999).  A four-time NHL All Star, Nieuwyndyk has held various front office roles between Florida, Toronto, Dallas and Carolina since retirement.

CHAMPS WELL REPRESENTED: Team Black netminder Luke Pavicich (Clarence Center, N.Y.), Team Gold defenseman Hunter McDonald (Fairport, N.Y) as well as Team Orange forwards Declan McDonnell (Lakeview, N.Y.) and Nathan Mann (Hilton, N.Y.) were all members of the 2018 Tier-I 15-Only National Champion Buffalo Jr. Sabres.  The club edged Detroit Little Caesars in the final game by a score of 2-1, with all four aforementioned camp competitors playing key roles in the winning effort.  McDonnell’s game-winning goal was assisted by Mann, McDonald logged heavy minutes on the backend and Pavicich finished with 24 saves between the pipes to help secure the victory.

COLLEGE HOCKEY'S TRACK: College hockey’s presence in the United States continues to grow at all levels, with many of the competitors in this week’s camp striving to join the NCAA ranks in the future.  According to College Hockey, Inc., 310 NCAA alumni appeared in the NHL during the 2017-18 campaign, the fourth time in which that number has topped 300.  In addition, among NHLers who made their league debut in 2017-18, 37% played college hockey.  Overall, former college players made up 32% of all NHL skaters this past season.
