USWNT Honored as 2018 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year

Award handed out at the fourth annual Sports Humanitarian Awards, presented by ESPN, in Los Angeles

The U.S. Women’s National Team was honored tonight (July 17) as the 2018 Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year at the fourth annual Sports Humanitarian Awards, presented by ESPN, at The Novo in Los Angeles.

The Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year represents a sports club/team that demonstrates how teamwork can create a measurable impact on a community or cause.

The U.S. Women’s National Team has remained committed to growing the game of hockey by sharing the love for the game with young hockey players around the country and paving the way for the next generation of female hockey players. Throughout the 2017-18 season, the USWNT hosted girls hockey clinics in multiple different markets and took every opportunity to meet with young girls, and share words of wisdom and inspiration.

Team captain Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) was joined by her teammates on stage to accept the award.

At the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, the U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team defeated Canada, 3-2, in a shootout to win the gold medal. It marked Team USA's second-ever gold medal after Team USA earned the inaugural gold medal in the event at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. The U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team has medaled in all six Olympic appearances to date (gold – 1998, 2018; silver – 2002, 2010, 2014 and bronze – 2006).

The USWNT also won all four games it played to earn its third-straight championship at the 2017 Four Nations Cup, held Nov. 7-12, 2017, in Wesley Chapel and Tampa, Fla., as part of The Time is Now Tour, presented by Toyota.

NOTES: Members of the 2018 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team will be present at the 2018 ESPYS tomorrow (July 18) . . . The U.S. women earned three nominations for the 2018 ESPYS following its gold-medal performance in PyeongChang. In addition to being nominated for Best Team, the team also received nominations for Best Game and Best Olympic Moment for its triumphant shootout victory in the gold-medal game. Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson (Grand Forks, N.D.) also earned nominations in two categories, Best Female Olympian and Best Play, as a result of her game-winning shootout goal in the gold-medal game . . . Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.) from the gold medal-winning 2018 U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team  is also nominated for the second time in his career for the Best Male Athlete with a Disability ESPY . . .  The ESPYS will air live tomorrow (July 18) on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.
