Recap: USA White 7, Canada Red 5

Ivan Lodnia (Novi, Mich.) opened the scoring 7:17 into the game when Jason Robertson (Northville, Mich.) collected his own rebound in the right corner and found Lodnia alone at the right hashmark for the game’s opening goal.

Just 1:39 later, Canada Red’s Noah Dobson evened the score but Robertson was able to connect less than a minute later to put USA White back up, 2-1. Josh Norris (Oxford, Mich.) started the play with a face-off win that Robertson was able to collect and carry behind the goal-line for a shot that bounced off DiPietro and into the goal.

With 4:54 to play in the first period, Ian Mitchell’s shot from the right face-off dot beat U.S. netminder Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) low blocker-side to knot the score at 2-2 entering the first intermission.

In the middle stanza, Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) scored twice in the first 6:37 of the period to put USA White up, 4-2. Farabee’s first goal came 2:17 into the frame when a broken play resulted in Cole Coskey (Zion, Ill.) pouncing on a breakaway chance and dishing the puck to Farabee for the tap-in goal. Just 4:20 later, Farabee scored again after Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) carried the puck around the goal and found Farabee at the right face-off dot for a shot that beat DiPietro at the far-post.

USA White extended its lead 9:05 into the frame when Jack Drury (Winnetka, Ill.) took a centering pass from Matt Anderson (Shakopee, Minn.) and tucked it into the top left corner.

A power-play goal from Canada Red’s Nick Suzuki with 7:29 left in the frame made the score 5-3 after two periods.

In the final frame, Antoine Morand score 48 seconds into the period before Isaac Ratcliffe connected just over six minutes later to push the score to 5-5.

With 2:25 remaining, Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) tallied the game-winner off a feed from his brother Jack before Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) scored an empty-net goal in the final minute to account for the 7-5 final.

RECAP: USA BLUE 3, CANADA WHITE 2

U.S. netminder Kyle Keyser (Coral Springs, Fla.) was called on early as he turned aside a 3-on-1 scoring opportunity less than two minutes into the game.

At 2:21, Sasha Chmelevski (Northville, Mich.) put USA Blue up 1-0 when his snap shot from the right face-off dot beat Canadian netminder Olivier Rodrigue. The play started with Jake Wise (North Andover, Mass.) winning a race to the puck in Canada’s corner and backhanding a pass that Chmelevski one-timed over Rodrigue’s shoulder.

Less than four minutes later, Keyser again came up big as he denied another odd-man Canadian rush.

With 7:56 to play in the opening frame, Logan Hutsko (North Caldwell, N.J.) doubled the U.S. lead when his wrist shot from the slot beat Rodrigue low glove-side. Wise was again behind the goal as this time his defensive play in Canada’s zone forced the puck loose and into the hands of Hutsko.

Canada White even the score :40 later when Barrett Hayton deflected a shot from the point through Keyser.  Both teams finished the period with nine shots apiece as the U.S. entered the intermission with a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless middle stanza, Canada White evened the score 2:33 into the final frame when Cody Glass connected on the power play.

With 10:05 to play in the game, Chmelevski tallied his second of the game when he received a pass from Brady Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo.) off the right wall and tucked the puck past the left pad of Canadian goaltender Matthew Welsh.
