GAMEDAY: Under-18 and Under-22 Series kick off tonight in Calgary

CALGARY - The U.S. Under-18 and Under-22 Women’s Select Teams will open up a three-game series against Canada tonight (Aug. 16) at the Markin MacPhail Center in Calgary, Alberta. The U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team will play at 4 p.m. local time/6 p.m. ET and the U.S. Under-22 Women’s Select Team will play at 7 p.m. local time/9 p.m. ET. All Series games will be streamed live on HockeyCanada.ca (see schedule below for direct links) and HockeyTV.com, and updates will be provided on Twitter @USAHockey using #U18Series and #U22Series.

U18: USA vs. Canada

U18 GAMEDAY: The Under-18 Series vs. Canada has been held annually since 2007. After the 2017 event, the U.S. and Canada have now met 11 times at the U18 Series and Team USA holds a 14-1-3-15 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record against its northern rival.

AT THE HELM: Maura Crowell (Mansfield, Mass.), head women's ice hockey coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth, is serving as head coach for the U.S. Under-18 Women's Select Team alongside assistant coaches Josh Sciba (Westland, Mich.), head women's hockey coach at Union College, and Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.), member of the gold medal-winning 2018 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team. Crowell is serving as head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team for the first time in her career, after having served as associate coach in 2017-18 and assistant coach in 2015-16. In both previous seasons, Team USA has taken home gold medals from the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship.

ON TOP OF THE WORLD: The 2018 U.S. Under-18 Women's Select Team roster features eight players who helped the 2018 U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team earn a gold medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championship in Dmitrov, Russia. They are Hannah Bilka (Coppell, Texas), Hadley Hartmetz (Phoenixville, Pa.), Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.), Maggie Nicholson (Minnetonka, Minn.), Casey O'Brien (Milton, Mass.), Dominique Petrie (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), Sydney Shearen (Hugo, Minn.) and Makenna Webster (St. Louis, Mo.). The win at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship in Dmitrov, Russia, marked an unprecedented fourth consecutive gold medal for the U.S. women.

U22: USA vs. Canada

U22 GAMEDAY: The U.S. and Canada have met 13 times at the Under-22 Series and Team USA holds a 14-3-3-17-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) record. The U22 Series been held every non-Olympic year since 1999.

LEADING THE WAY: Joel Johnson (White Bear Lake, Minn.), associate head coach for the University of Minnesota women's ice hockey program, is serving as head coach of the U.S. Under-22 Women's Select Team alongside assistant coaches Bob Corkum (Salisbury, Mass.), former assistant coach of the NHL's New York Islanders, and Katie Lachapelle (Lewiston, Maine), associate head women's ice hockey coach at the College of the Holy Cross. Johnson served as head coach for the U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team during the 2017-18 season, his fourth consecutive season serving in that capacity, which culminated in a gold-medal victory at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship.

A RIVALRY RENEWED: The 2018 U.S. Under-22 Series will mark the first time putting on a USA sweater since winning gold at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games for Olympians Cayla Barnes (Eastvale, Calif.) and Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.). Barnes, who has participated in the Series vs. Canada three times before (2014,  2015,  2016), will be making her debut as a member of the U22 Women’s Select Team, alongside Rooney, a member of the 2013 U18 Women’s Select Team, who will also make her debut with the older group at this event.

RETURNING TO THE LINEUP: The 2018 U.S. U22 Women’s Select Team roster also includes six players that competed in this Series the last time it was held in 2016.  They are Kaitlin Burt (Lynn, Mass.), Rebecca Gilmore (Wayland, Mass.), Caitrin Lonergan (Roslindale, Mass.), Patti Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.), Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Sophia Shaver (Wayzata, Minn.).
