U18: USA vs. Canada

GAMEDAY: The Under-18 Series vs. Canada has been held annually since 2007. After the 2017 event, the U.S. and Canada have now met 11 times at the U18 Series and Team USA holds a 14-1-3-15 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record against its northern rival, not including yesterday's win.

GAME 1 RECAPCasey O'Brien (Milton, Mass.) scored the game-winner 1:17 into overtime as the U.S. Under-18 Women's Select Team topped Canada, 2-1, in the opening game of the 2018 Under-18 Series. Canada opened the scoring during the second frame when a net-front scramble resulted in a deflected puck flying up and over U.S. goalie Skylar Vetter (Lakeville, Minn.) to give the Canadians a one-goal lead with 5:58 remaining in the period. Makenna Webster (St. Louis, Mo.) netted the equalizer with 2:33 to play when she finished a feed from Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) on the rush. O'Brien buried the game-winner 1:17 into overtime when her shot from the left circle beat Kirk for a power-play tally. Vetter finished with 28 saves to earn the victory in net for Team USA. MAK ATTACK: Makenna Webster's game-tying goal yesterday again proved that she has the ability to come through in the clutch. In January, Webster netted the overtime winner and was named player of the game in Team USA's 2-1 victory over Sweden at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship, where she led the team with nine points (2-7) and was named a top-three U.S. player in the tournament.

TRIPLE THREAT: Today is a special day for USA Hockey. Not only will Maddy Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Conn.) don a USA sweater for the U18 squad, her twin brother Mackie Samoskevich is also representing the U.S. at the Five Nations tournament in Piestany, Slovakia. Their older sister, Melissa Samoskevich will also skate for the U.S. Under-22 team, to make it three Samoskevich siblings on the ice for Team USA in the same day.

GAMEDAY: The U.S. and Canada have met 13 times at the Under-22 Series and Team USA holds a 14-3-3-17-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) record not including yesterday's win. The U22 Series been held every non-Olympic year since 1999.

GAME 1 RECAPTaylor Heise (Lake City, Minn.) scored twice and eight other American skaters earned points as the U.S. Under-22 Women’s Select Team defeated Canada, 4-1, in the opening game of the 2018 Under-22 Series. Team USA broke the ice early when Mikaela Gardner (Plainfield, Ill.) banged home a rebound off a Natalie Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.) shot to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead 1:53 into the opening frame. Canada evened the score at one apiece with 6:15 remaining in the first period. The U.S. regained the lead 5:37 into the second period when Heise put another rebound past Tricia Deguire. The play materialized as Sophia Shaver (Wayzata, Minn.) gained the zone and fed a pass to Britta Curl (Bismarck, N.D.), who ripped a shot on net from the top of the right face-off circle, resulting in an opportunity for Heise. Heise scored her second goal of the night when she corralled a loose puck in front to beat Deguire top-left corner with 7:24 remaining, giving the U.S. a 3-1 advantage. Grace Zumwinkle (Excelsior, Minn.) then added an empty-net goal with 1:42 to play to account for the 4-1 final. Rooney finished with 18 saves to earn the win. For complete game stats, click here.

RISING STAR: This year, Taylor Heise, an under-18 standout, aged up into the under-22 age group and has made an immediate impact, scoring a pair of goals in her under-22 debut. Heise, a three-time IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship gold medalist, was named the 2018 tournament's top forward and tournament MVP after scoring 8 points (4-4) in five games played in Dmitrov, Russia.

YOUTH HOCKEY SPOTLIGHT: U.S. forward Caitrin Lonergan (Roslindale, Mass.) grew up playing hockey for Assabet Valley in Concord, Mass., which helped her become the player she is today. Given the opportunity to thank anyone in her hockey career, Lonergan chose Assabet Valley's Carl Gray.

"Carl constantly pushed me to want to be not only a better hockey player but person."
