Team USA looking for second victory in Piestany; Puck drops at 8:30 a.m. ET

The United States Under-17 Men's Select Team is looking for its second win at the 2018 Five Nations Tournament today at 2:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. ET) against Slovakia. Hockey Slovakia will provide live streaming of the game from Easton Arena in Piestany, Slovakia.

Today's Opponent: Slovakia

Team USA is 5-0 in its last five meetings with Slovakia at the Five Nations Tournament, outscoring the Slovaks 30-8 over that span.

The two teams met in a pre-tournament exhibition game on August 13, with the U.S. winning 4-2. Mackie Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Conn.) scored two goals, including the game-winner. Ben Schoen (Maumee, Ohio) and Tanner Dickinson (Perrysburg, Ohio) also recorded goals for Team USA.

2017 vs. Slovakia

Josh Groll (San Diego, Calif.) and Cole McWard (Fenton, Mo.) each recorded a goal and two assists when the United States Under-17 Men’s Select Team beat Slovakia, 7-1, in the second game of the 2017 Five Nations Tournament.

Jake Hale (Minneapolis, Minn.) opened the scoring 5:11 into the game with assists from Groll and McWard.

After Solvakia netted an equalizer 1:18 into the second period, John Farinacci (Chatham, N.J.) banged home a rebound on the power play 9:21 into the period to put Team USA up 2-1.

Twenty seconds into the third period, Grant Silianoff (Edina, Minn.) slipped through a Slovakian defender to tuck in a backhanded goal, followed by Arthur Kaliyev (Staten Island, N.Y.) netting a rebound off a Dylan Wendt (Grand Haven, Mich.) shot just 25 seconds later to give the U.S. a 4-1 advantage. McWard, Groll and Ryan Johnson (Irvine, Calif.) closed the scoring for Team USA, scoring three consecutive goals to put the game away.

U.S. goaltender Ethan Haider (Maple Grove, Minn.) stopped 13 of 14 Slovakian shots in the victory.

Dennehy Leading the Way

Mark Dennehy (St. Cloud, Minn.) is the head coach of the 2018 U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team after serving as an assistant coach last year in Ostrava, Czech Republic, when the U.S. claimed first place. The head coach of the Binghamton Devils, the New Jersey Devils' AHL affiliate, Dennehy previously coached the Merrimack Warriors of the Hockey East Association for 13 years. The staff also includes assistant coaches Roger Grillo (Providence, R.I.), Matthew Curley (Madrid, N.Y.) and Joseph Palmer (Syracuse, N.Y.).

USA Hockey Player Development Camps

The 2018 U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team was chosen from players skating at USA Hockey's 2018 Boys Select 16 Player Development Camp in Amherst, New York. The USA Hockey National Player Development Camps for 15-year-olds, 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds provide the nation’s top young players with age-appropriate on- and off-ice training and coaching from elite-level instructors, as well as the opportunity to compete against their peers from throughout the country. Players earn invitations to the national camps through their performance at a series of state- and district-level camps held each season. The camps are designed so players return home afterward with the tools to further develop their skills over the course of the coming season and beyond. Since their launch in 1977, USA Hockey’s National Player Development Camps have been a springboard for countless future Olympians and professional players.
