BURLINGTON, Vt. – The U.S. Women's National Team fell to Canada, 5-4, in overtime in the gold-medal game of the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship here tonight at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Team USA finished the tournament in second place and earned the silver medal with a 4-0-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.

"I'm extremely proud of how our kids battled out of a major hole that we were in against a really good team," said Katey Stone, head coach for the U.S. Women's National Team. "We got ourselves in a position to win the game, but unfortunately it didn't happen."

Canada struck first at 7:52 before Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) evened the score at 12:54 of the first period to send the teams into the first intermission tied 1-1.

The second period opened with two Canadian goals less than two minutes apart before Brianna Decker(Dousman, Wis.) connected on the power play from the left faceoff circle at 16:43 to cut the deficit to one. Gigi Marvin (Warroad, Minn.) followed suit with a power-play goal at 18:16 with a redirected shot from the point.

Marvin scored her second power-play goal of the night at 2:57 of the third period to give the U.S. a 4-3 lead. But Canada notched a power-play tally at 17:22 to send the game to overtime and scored at 1:50 of the extra session to claim the gold medal.

NOTES: Kendall Coyne was named the U.S. Player of the Game ... Kelli Stack was selected as the top forward of the tournament by the directorate ... Molly Schaus, Kelli Stack and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls were selected as the best players of the team by the coaches ... Monique Lamoureux-Kolls leads the tournament with 14 points (7-7) ... Julie Chu served as Team USA's captain, while Jenny Potter and Kacey Bellamy were alternate captains ... Team USA has won four gold medals and nine silvers in the 13 previous IIHF Women's World Championships. The U.S. has won four of the last five world championships (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011) ... Harvard University's Katey Stone served as the head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team. Joining Stone as assistant coaches were Laura Halldorson and Bobby Jay. Stone and Jay were behind the bench for the U.S. at the 2011 Four Nations Cup ... Robb Stauber served as the goaltending coach, while Michael Boyle was the strength and conditioning coach.
