GAMEDAY: U.S. Ready for Semifinal Clash with Finland

U.S. looking to advance to 12th consecutive gold medal game

The U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team (3-0-0-0/W-OTW-OTL-L) takes on Finland tonight as it looks for its fourth consecutive victory at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship. Puck drop for the semifinal matchup is set for 1 p.m. local time (11 p.m. ET/Jan. 11).

The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team plays its fourth game at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship today against Finland at Obihiro Forest Ice Arena. The game will be streamed live on IIHF.com (see schedule below for direct links) and live game updates will be provided on Twitter.

FACING THE FINS

The U.S. holds a 1-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record against Finland all-time in IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship play. The two teams last met on Mar. 29, 2010 in the preliminary of the 2010 tournament, where the U.S. earned a 5-0 victory. Two-time Olympian and 2018 Olympic gold medal winner Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) tallied two goals in the game, while another 2018 gold medalist, Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis.) recorded a 13-save shutout.

GAME THREE RECAP

Lacey Eden (Annapolis, Md.) scored the game-winning goal and Skylar Vetter (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded a 17-save shutout as Team USA defeated Sweden, 2-0, in its final preliminary round game of the 2019 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship.

"Tonight was a great win against a quality opponent and I’m really proud of the way our group is progressing," said Maura Crowell (Mansfield, Mass.), head coach of the 2019 U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team. "We'll enjoy this win tonight before turning our attention to preparing for Saturday’s semifinal starting tomorrow."

GUNNING FOR GOLD

Team USA has claimed gold in four straight IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championships and, with a win on Saturday, would have a chance to compete for an unprecedented five consecutive gold medals. 

The U.S. has played in the gold-medal game in all 11 of the previous International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women's World Championships, capturing the event's top prize now a total of seven times (2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). Team USA is 48-5-3-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in 58 career games.
