The United States hosted the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship for the third time when the 1996 event took place in Boston, Massachusetts. This was the first edition of the tournament to implement two groups that saw the teams partake in a round-robin preliminary round and a playoff format.
Team USA, captained by Bryan Berard, defeated Finland, 5-4, in overtime of the fifth place game to earn a 2-1-0-3-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) record. Mike Sylvia led the U.S. in points with seven while future U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Chris Drury (2015 inductee) tallied a pair of goals and assists for four points.
