The United States held the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship for the second time when the 1989 event was held in Anchorage, Alaska. There, the U.S. National Junior Team finished in fifth place with a 3-3-1 (W-L-T) record.
Team USA was paced by Jeremy Roenick and Mike Modano, who finished first and second in tournament scoring with 16 (8-8) and 15 (6-9) points, respectively. Roenick became the first U.S. player to lead a World Junior Championship in scoring and his eight goals are still a U.S. single World Junior Championship record.
