In the third consecutive Olympic Winter Games featuring National Hockey League players, the United States entered Torino with high expectations after capturing the silver medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. In Team USA’s first game, the U.S. tied Latvia, 3-3, before defeating Kazakhstan, 4-1, in its second game. The U.S. would then lose three straight one-goal games to close out preliminary-round play before falling to Finland, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.
