Ornskoldsvik & Umea, Sweden | April 18-28, 2019

The U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team went 6-0-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and earned a bronze medal to extend its unprecedented medal streak in tournament play to 16 straight IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championships.

The 2019 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship took place April 18-28, 2019, in Ornskoldsvik and Umea, Sweden. The tournament saw the U.S. earn first in Group B during the preliminary round, winning all four of its preliminary contests and outscoring its opponents, 31-10. In the playoff round, the U.S. defeated Finland, 6-0, in the quarterfinals before meeting Russia in the semifinals. There, the U.S. trailed, 1-0, heading into the third period, before scoring back-to-back goals just 3:04 apart to take the lead. With 12:33 to play in regulation, Russia was able to score to tie the contest before topping the U.S. in the shootout. Tied at one after the first period of the bronze-medal game, Team USA scored four consecutive goals and defeated Canada, 5-1, to secure its 16th consecutive medal at the tournament.

Serving as head coach for Team USA was John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis.), head coach of the Under-18 Team with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. He was joined behind the U.S. bench by assistant coaches Dan Hinote (Elk River, Minn.) and Kevin Lind (Homer Glen, Ill.), who also worked with the Under-18 Team with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program during the 2018-19 season. Scott Monaghan (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.), senior director of operations for the NTDP, served as general manager.
