SALZBURG, Austria – The U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team defeated the Red Bull Academy Under-18 Team, 7-1, in an exhibition friendly ahead of the 2019 Five Nations Tournament today at the RBS Akademie.
"I'm really happy with the effort tonight," said head coach Matt Curley. "It was a great first test for the group here. We have a lot of things to work on, but overall I was really happy with the effort, intensity, urgency and the to want to get better."
The U.S. will take on Germany in the final exhibition contest Sunday (Aug. 11) before opening tournament play against Slovakia on Tuesday (Aug. 13). Puck drop is slated for 9 a.m. MT.
Simon Motew (Highland Park, Ill.) notched a pair of goals in the victory, and Jackson Blake (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Luke Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each recorded three-point games to lead the U.S. in scoring.
Davis Burnside (La Grange, Ill.) opened the scoring for the U.S. 9:21 into the first period, and tallies from Motew and Luke Buss (Kansas City, Mo.) gave Team USA a 4-0 lead heading into the second period.
Red Bull cut the lead to 4-1 in the second period, but the U.S. went a three-goal scoring run, with goals from Blake and Bennett Schimek (Mendota Heights, Minn.), to secure a 7-1 win over the host team.
Will Fox (Grosse Point, Mich.) and Hobie Hedquist (Heron Lake, Minn.) each saw time in the net for U.S., combining for 19 saves.
