U.S. opens tournament play Tuesday against Slovakia

FÜSSEN, Germany – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select team defeated Germany, 5-0, in its exhibition tune-up at Füssen Arena ahead of the 2019 Five Nations Tournament.

Team USA opens tournament play Tuesday (Aug. 13) with a matchup against Slovakia at Füssen Arena. Puck drop is slated for 9 a.m. ET.

“It was another great game tonight,” said head coach Matt Curley. “We took a real nice step from our first exhibition game. Back to work tomorrow before the tournament begins. I like what we’ve seen in the last two games, and hope for even better things to come going forward.”

David Hymovitch (Phoenix, Ariz.) capitalized on a centering pass from Billy Norcross (Lynn, Mass.) 1:23 into the first period to open the scoring for the United States.

With five minutes to play in the frame, Hobie Hedquist (Heron Lake, Minn.) was called upon with a big glove-save on a Germany powerplay to keep the U.S. up, 1-0, into the first intermission.

Hymovitch and Kenny Connors (Glen Mills, Penn.) tallied back-to-back goals 10 seconds apart to extend Team USA’s lead to 3-0 at the 9:48 mark of the second frame. Davis Burnside (La Grange, Ill.) nearly joined in on the scoring moments later but his chance rang off the post.

In the final stanza, Tyler Haskins (Rochester, Minn.) put away a loose rebound in the crease to make it a 4-0 game before Gleb Veremyev (Sayreville, N.J.) fired a 2-on-1 feed from Jack Peart (Grand Rapids, Minn.) past German goaltender Nikita Quapp to secure a 5-0 victory over the host nation.

Both Will Fox (Grosse Point, Mich.) and Hedquist saw time in the net to split the shutout save for the United States.

NOTES: The U.S. outshot Germany 22-4 and 14-0 in the first period … Luke Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie, Minn.) recorded a three-point effort in the win … Follow Team USA throughout the 2019 Five Nations Tournament here.
