U.S. Women’s Nat’l Univ. Team Defeats Japan, 3-2

ALMATY, KazakhstanKendra Myers (Cedar Springs, Mich./Grand Valley State University) scored two goals, including the game-winner with 7:05 left in the second period, to lead the U.S. Women’s National University Team to a 3-2 victory over Japan in its final preliminary-round game at the 2017 Winter World University Games.

"I'm very proud of this team," said Shelley Looney, head coach of the 2017 U.S. Women's National University Team. "We fought hard to the end tonight and I can see us getting better with every game."

Leah MacArthur (Boulder, Colo./University of Colorado) opened the scoring for Team USA with 4:32 remaining in the opening period on a play assisted by Nicole Matthews (West Chester, Ohio/Miami University) and Rachael Booth (Washington, Mich./Miami University).

Myers doubled the U.S. advantage seven minutes into the middle frame before Japan made the score 2-1 just 38 seconds later.

Team USA restored a two-goal lead on Myers’ second tally of the game with 7:05 left in the second stanza.

Japan halved the U.S. lead 8:16 into the final period, but the U.S. killed off a late 5-on-3 advantage for Japan in the closing minutes of the game to preserve the 3-2 victory.

Amber Greene (Feedings Hills, Mass./University of Massachusetts) made 32 saves to earn the win in goal.

Alexandra Brown (Plano, Texas/Lindenwood University-Belleville) and Sabrena Camp (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adrian College) also notched assists for Team USA.

The U.S. will earn a berth into Saturday's (Feb. 4) semifinal round with a Russia victory over Japan on Thursday (Feb. 2).
