GETTING OFFENSIVE: Emily Pfalzer recorded a hat trick and 12 different U.S. players registered points as Team USA topped Finland, 8-2, to open the 2017 Four Nations Cup last night at Florida Hospital Center Ice. Pfalzer finished the night with a total of four points, adding an assist to her three-goal effort. Four more U.S. players, including Dani Cameranesi (1-1) Meghan Duggan (0-2), Amanda Kessel (1-1) and Kelly Pannek (1-1), had multi-point outings, having recorded two apiece. Maddie Rooney got the start in goal for the U.S., and turned away 11 of 13 shots from Team Finland to help her team to its first victory of the tournament.

A NIGHT OF FIRSTS: Pfalzer’s hat trick last night marked the first of her U.S. Women’s National Team career. Cayla Barnes, who joined the U.S. Women’s National Team just more than one week ago on Oct. 28, recorded her first goal of the season in last night’s game against Finland. Barnes, who did not compete in either of the first two games of the 2017-18 season for Team USA, will make her first start against rival Canada tonight.

ALL TIED UP: Tonight’s game will mark the third meeting this season between the U.S. and Canada. The two squads have faced off twice thus far during the 2017-18 season, splitting the series 1-1. The last meeting between the two teams took place on Oct. 25 in Boston, Mass., the first stop on The Time is Now Tour, presented by Toyota. In that game, the U.S. fell to Canada, 5-1. Prior to that, the U.S. defeated Canada, 5-2, in Quebec City, Quebec, in the first of a slate of games the teams will play against each other north of the border.

BRING ON THE CUP: The U.S. and Canada have met frequently during the Four Nations Cup, with the last game taking place on Nov. 5, 2016, in Jarvanpaa, Finland. The U.S. defeated Canada, 5-3, to win the tournament. The U.S. has competed in the tournament 20 of 21 times, having not participated in 2001. Team USA has captured the title seven times (1997, 2003, 2008, 2011-12, 2015-16), finished second 12 times and third in the tournament in 2013.

SINCE SOCHI: Since falling to Canada in overtime, 3-2, and earning a silver medal at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the U.S. Women’s National Team has played Canada in six international events (three IIHF Women’s World Championships and three Four Nations Cups), winning five of six titles and nine of 12 games overall. Overall, the U.S. has won 10 of 16 games against Canada since the Sochi Olympics.
