Örnsköldsvik, Sweden -- Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) set the record for most points (32) at the International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Men’s World Championship with his one goal, two-assist performance in Team USA's 5-2 victory over Canada at the Fjallraven Center to take the bronze medal.
“I can’t say how proud I am of this group’s growth, both as players and as people,” said John Wroblewski (Nennah, Wis.), head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team. “We wanted to walk away with a gold medal, but that won’t define this team. These guys are a truly special group and I can’t wait to see what they do in the future.”
Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) put Team USA on the board with the man advantage 8:03 into play when he one-timed a Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) feed in front of the crease.
Canada netted the equalizer in the final minute of the first period with a goal from Dylan Cozens on the power play.
Hughes gave Team USA the lead 6:54 into the second frame when he capitalized on a give-and-go play with Cam York (Anaheim Hills, Calif.)
Bobby Brink (Minnetonka, Minn.) increased the lead to 5-1 on the power play when he faked a shot to stickhandle and fire one past Team Canada netminder Nolan Maier.
York scored with 4:42 remaining in the middle period on the power play off a feed from Hughes. With the assist, Hughes exceeded Alexander Ovechkin to be the all-time leading scorer at the IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship.
York tallied another goal on the power play with 5:34 left on the clock. York’s combines 17 points for the tournament mark him as the highest scoring defenseman in U18 Men's World Championship history.
Canada closed the scoring 6 seconds remaining to account for the 5-2 final.
Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) made 21 saves in the victory.
