2023 U.S. National Junior Team Preliminary Roster Unveiled

Players vying to earn spot on final 23-player U.S. roster; camp starts Sunday in Plymouth, Mich.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey today named 32 players to the preliminary roster of its 2023 U.S. National Junior Team. The group, which includes eight members of the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team, will gather for a training camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich., from Dec. 12-17. 

Players are auditioning for a spot on the final 23-player roster that will represent the United States in the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2022 – Jan. 5, 2023, in Moncton, New Brunswick, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The United States has medaled in five of the last seven tournaments.

“It’s amazing to see the talent we have around the country, and, as always, we’ll have some difficult decisions to make to get to our final roster,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, general manager of the 2023 U.S. National Junior Team and also the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. “When we get into selecting players for any of our national teams, I’m always reminded of the thousands of volunteers at the grassroots level who have played a big part in helping our players reach their potential during their youth hockey years and we’re thankful to all of them.”

The 32 players are comprised of the top American players born in 2003 or later ... The players hail from 15 different states, led by Minnesota (5), Michigan (4), Massachusetts (3), Pennsylvania (3) and Illinois (3) ... A total of 31 players are currently playing, have played or are committed to play college hockey in the U.S., with the University of Minnesota and University of Michigan leading the way with five players ... The 32 players include seven first-round NHL draft picks, seven second-rounders and 24 NHL draft picks in total. Eight players are 2023 NHL Draft eligible ... All but one of the 32 players have competed in the United States Hockey League, the only Tier I junior league in the U.S. ... A total of 25 players have played at least one game as part of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, including 22 as full-time members of the two-year residency program.

Preliminary Roster

NHL Network is the exclusive home of the IIHF World Junior Championship in the United States and will televise every Team USA game in addition to many others, including all quarterfinal, semifinal and medal games.

NOTES: The U.S. training camp in Plymouth, Mich., is open to the public. One practice will be held daily starting at 11 a.m. ET, with the exception of Dec. 14, when practice begins at 2 p.m. … Rand Pecknold (Quinnipiac University/Boston) is the head coach of the 2023 U.S. National Junior Team with Pat Ferschwiler (Western Michigan University/Rochester, Minn.), Reid Cashman(Dartmouth College/Red Wing, Minn.) and Nick Fohr (U.S. National Under-18 Team/Grand Forks, N.D.) serving as assistant coaches; Jared Waimon (Tampa Bay Lightning/New Milford, Conn.) as goaltending coach; and Jessica Thibault (Sacred Heart University/Guilford, Conn.) as team leader … Team USA will play its preliminary round games in Moncton against Group B opponents Finland, Latvia, Slovakia and Switzerland.
