Team USA leads Rivalry Series 3-2; final two games set for February

LOS, ANGELES – The U.S. Women's National Team fell, 3-2 in overtime, to Canada in game five of the 2022-23 Rivalry Series at Crypto.com Arena on Monday evening.

“Once the puck drops, it’s always so intense out there,” said John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis.), head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team. “It’s always a battle when you put the U.S. and Canada on the ice together. I liked our fight out there, but unfortunate the bounces did not go our way tonight.”

Team USA opened the game with numerous early opportunities. Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) had her first scoring chance less than a minute in, settling an Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) shot that was gloved by the Canadian netminder Emerance Maschmeyer.

It was defender Cayla Barnes (Eastvale, Calif.) that broke the ice 4:06 into the opening frame to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. Barnes took a pass from Kendall Coyne Schofield (Palos, Heights, Ill.) at the right point and ripped a rising shot that found its way into the back of the net.

HIGHLIGHTS

The U.S. kept the offensive momentum going in the first, drawing the first power play of the game 11:35 into the game. Despite multiple chances, the U.S. was held off the board.

Canada tied the game on the power play 3:29 into the second, when Laura Stacey deflected the puck past U.S. netminder Nicole Hensley (Lakewood, Colo.).

The U.S. worked hard to create scoring chances in Canada’s zone, with a Savannah Harmon (Downer’s Grove, Ill.) shot inside the faceoff dot just going high over the post.

Knight also got a good look, driving hard to the net looking to send one home off a pass from Barnes, but Maschmeyer was able to swallow the puck.

Canada score on the power play with just under three minutes to play to take a 2-1 advantage into the final frame.

The U.S. knotted the game 9:44 into the third when Taylor Heise (Lake City, Minn.) scored her first of the Rivalry Series. Carpenter carried a puck into the left side of the zone, and saucered a pass to Heise who rifled a shot from the right faceoff circle.

Play remained spirited through the remainder of regulation, before heading to a three-on-three overtime period. With 2:45 left in extra time, Canada’s Danielle Serdachny carried the puck to the net on a two-on-one opportunity roofing it past Hensley.

The Rivalry Series will continue in February with the final two games in Canada. The dates and locations will be announced soon. Team USA currently leads the Rivalry Series three games to two.
