U.S. Collegiate Select Team Beats Canada, 4-3, Sweeps Collegiate Series

Under-18 Team Drops Final Contest, 5-2

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team recorded three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat Canada, 4-3, at the Lake Placid Olympic Center on Saturday. With the victory, the U.S. swept the Collegiate Series with a 3-0-0-0 record. 

The U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team dropped a hard-fought game, 5-2 to close out the Under-18 Select Series on Saturday.

Canada opened the game’s scoring 7:46 into the game. Following a turnover along the boards, Madeline Palumbo danced along the blue line before firing a high shot into the back of the net. 

Emma Peschel (Edina, Minn.) and Team USA answered back in the closing minutes of the period when a shot from the left dot found its way behind Canada’s netminder. 

Early in the second Canada regained the lead after Jade Iginla capitalizing on a 5-on-3 opportunity. Canada added another goal, once again on the power play, when Jocelyn Amos converted a shot from inside the left circle, putting Canada up 3-1. 

In the third Kiara Zanon (Fairport, N.Y.) got the U.S. back within one beating Canada’s Hannah Murphy early in the final frame. The U.S. tied the game in the waning seconds of a power play with 8:03 left in the third. Zanon tapped a rebound in for her second of the game.

Kirsten Simms (Plymouth, Minn.) tallied the go-ahead goal with 5:47 remaining in the third. On a 2-on-1 opportunity, Casey O’Brien (Aquinnah, Mass.) sauced a pass to Simms, who put the puck away.

U.S. Under-18 Women's Select Team 2, Canada 5

The U.S. struck first three minutes into the first period. Following a successful penalty kill, Kassidy Carmichael (Westford, Mass.) received a clearing pass at the offensive blue line, splitting the Canadian defenders and scoring on a breakaway wrister. 

Canada knotted the score midway through the first after a defensive breakdown in front of the net resulted in Jessica Mackinnon slipping a shot into the back of the net. 

Team USA jumped back on top, 2-1, with 1:53 remaining in the opening frame when Josie St. Martin (Stillwater, Minn.) rocketed a shot glove side from right inside the left circle. 

Canada answered back in the second, capitalizing off a shorthanded 3-on-1 opportunity to make it 2-2. 

Early in the third the U.S. went on the penalty kill, but Jordyn Petrie (Lincoln, Neb.) popped the puck loose creating a breakaway opportunity. Petrie was clipped from behind on the breakaway resulting in a penalty shot that was unsuccessful. Canada capitalized on the power play following the penalty shot to jump ahead 3-2.

The visitors added another with 9:26 to extend its lead to 4-2 and its final goal of the game with a minute left in the third.

The U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team finished the series with an 0-0-0-3 record. 

NOTES: Canada outshot the U.S., 31-21.
