U.S. Women’s Development Sled Hockey Team Wins Women’s World Challenge Title

Team USA skates to 2-0 victory over Canada to earn second-consecutive championship

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Kelsey DiClaudio (Plum, Pa.) and Lera Doederlein (San Diego, Calif.) each scored as the U.S. Women’s Development Sled Hockey Team skated to a 2-0 victory over Canada here today in the championship game of the 2023 Women’s World Challenge at the Cornerstone Community Center.

With the win, Team USA finished the tournament with an unbeaten record of 4-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) for the second consecutive season. The U.S. outscored its opponents 19-0 over four games.

Team USA generated several scoring chances in the opening period, including a Doederlein breakaway, but both sides remained scoreless through one.

Just over two minutes into the middle frame, the U.S. gained possession of the puck in the offensive zone during a Canada delayed penalty. DiClaudio cut through the slot and fired the go-ahead goal into the top left corner at the 2:35 mark.

In the opening minutes of the third period, goaltender Hope Bevilhymer (West Jordan, Utah) made a lunging save, shutting down a breakaway chance to maintain the U.S. lead.

With 5:04 remaining in the contest, Doederlein finished a breakaway chance with an assist from Robynne Hill (Fountain, Colo.) giving Team USA a 2-0 lead to cap off the championship-winning performance.

Bevilhymer earned a shutout between the pipes for the U.S.

NOTES: Robynne Hill (Fountain, Colo.) was named U.S. Player of the Game… The U.S. outshot Canada 25-1… The U.S. was 0-4 on the power play, while Canada was 0-3.  

9/2: 7-0 Preliminary Round Win vs. Team World

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Madeleine Gallagher (Palm Bay, Fla.) scored twice while Lera Doederlein (San Diego, Calif.) recorded a goal and two assists to help the U.S. Women’s Development Sled Hockey Team to a 7-0 victory over Team World here today at the 2023 Women’s World Challenge at the Cornerstone Community Center.

With the win, Team USA wraps up preliminary round play with a 3-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.

Catherine Faherty (Norwell, Mass.) opened the scoring just 16 seconds into the game, collecting her third goal of the tournament on a helper from Doederlein . Doederlein added to the tally 17 seconds later, giving the U.S. a 2-0 lead. Gallagher scored at the 2:52 mark, followed by a Kaden Herchenroether (Allison Park, Penn.) goal at 3:40 of the opening frame.

Jamie Benassi (Newtown, Ohio) scored 16 seconds into the middle frame to give the U.S. a 5-0 lead. At the 7:07 mark of the second, Benassi and Doederlein assisted on a Robynne Hill (Fountain, Colo.) tally.

At the 5:46 mark of the third, Gallagher collected her second goal of the game, giving Team USA a 7-0 lead to cap off the victory.

Team USA will play in the championship game tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. CT against Canada. The game will be broadcast live on the Paralympics YouTube page.

9/1: 7-0 Preliminary Round Win vs. Great Britain

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Kaden Herchenroether (Allison Park, Penn.) scored twice and added a helper to lead the U.S. Women’s Development Sled Hockey Team to a 7-0 victory over Great Britain here today in preliminary round play of the 2023 Women’s World Challenge at the Cornerstone Community Center.

The U.S. jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minute. Catherine Faherty (Norwell, Mass.) scored just 32 seconds into the contest, and Herchenroether picked up her first goal of the tournament 16 seconds later. Herchenroether added her second tally of the game at the 2:05 mark to put the U.S. up 3-0. With 8:05 remaining in the opening stanza, Brianna Atkins (Ormond Beach, Fla.) scored from the doorstep to give Team USA a 4-0 lead.

Madeleine Gallagher (Palm Bay, Fla.) collected a tally just 49 seconds into the middle frame, and at the 2:21 mark, Jamie Benassi (Newtown, Ohio) recorded her first goal of the tournament to extend the U.S. lead to 6-0.

In the final minute of the game, Monica Quimby (Bradenton, Fla.) scored to cap off a 7-0 victory for Team USA.

Team USA will play its final preliminary round game tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT against Team World. The game will be broadcast live on the Paralympics YouTube page.

NOTES: Lera Doederlein (San Diego, Calif.) was named U.S. Player of the Game… The U.S. recorded 22 shots on goal … The U.S. was 0-2 on the power play, while Great Britain did not have a power play in the contest.

8/31: 3-0 Preliminary Round Win vs. Canada

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Catherine Faherty (Norwell, Mass.) collected a goal and an assist and the U.S. Women’s Development Sled Hockey Team scored a pair of shorthanded goals in a 3-0 victory over Canada here today in preliminary round play of the 2023 Women’s World Challenge at the Cornerstone Community Center.

Kelsey DiClaudio (Plum, Penn.) opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at the 8:24 mark of the first period, with assists from Faherty and Rachel Grusse (Vernon, Conn.). Just 19 seconds later, Lera Doederlein (San Diego, Calif.) picked up another short-handed tally for the U.S. to take a 2-0 lead.

Just over six minutes into the middle frame, Faherty scored to put Team USA up 3-0, with Jamie Benassi (Newtown, Ohio) recording a helper on the play.

Goaltenders Gabby Graves-Wake (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Hope Bevilhymer (West Jordan, Utah) earned a combined shutout in the U.S. net.

Team USA will play its second preliminary round game tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT against Great Britain. The game will be broadcast live on the Paralympics YouTube page.
