Joe Bonnett Named Head Coach of 2024 U.S. Youth Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team

Guerriero, Gilroy, Caruso named assistant coaches; support staff named

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Joe Bonnett (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who currently serves as a manager of player development at USA Hockey, has been named head coach of the 2024 U.S. Youth Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, it was announced today by USA Hockey. 

Team USA will compete in the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon, South Korea, from Jan. 19 – Feb. 1 against Canada, Czechia, Finland, Korea, and Slovakia.

Bonnett will be joined by assistant coaches Jason Guerriero (Manorville, N.Y.), Matt Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y.), and Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga.).

ABOUT BONNETT

Bonnett will serve as head coach of the Youth Olympic Men’s Team for the first time, having previously been an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-17 Select Team that won the 2017 and 2003 Five Nations Tournament. He also served as an assistant coach for the 2018 U.S. Under-18 Select Team at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. 

In his current role as a manager of player development for USA Hockey, Bonnett provides nationwide support for USA Hockey's age-appropriate skill development efforts and has been part of numerous USA Hockey Player Development Camps, including Select 14, Select 15, Select 16 and Select 17 camps.

The Michigan native served for 14 seasons (2000-14) as an assistant men’s ice hockey coach at Colorado College. Prior to joining the Tigers, Bonnett spent four years as recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for Miami University’s men’s ice hockey program.

Bonnett was a four-year letter winner at Western Michigan University (1989-93) where he was a forward on the men’s ice hockey team and served as an alternate captain his senior season.

ABOUT GILROY

Gilroy, who is in his second season as an assistant coach for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, will serve in the same capacity for the U.S. Youth Olympic Men’s Team for the first time. 

He spent the 2020-22 seasons as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings AAA youth hockey program, coaching at the 12U and 14U age levels.

An alternate captain for the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team and member of Team USA for the 2010 IIHF Men’s World Championship, Gilroy, a defenseman, played 10 years of professional hockey (2009-19), including in the NHL, AHL, KHL and in the Swiss NL. 

The New York native played four seasons (2006-09) for the Boston University men’s ice hockey team and his senior season captained the Terriers to the NCAA national championship and won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

ABOUT GUERRIERO

Guerriero is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Northeastern University men’s ice hockey team and will serve in the same capacity for the U.S. Youth Olympic Men’s Team for the first time. He has also been a director of on-ice player development at USA Hockey for seven years, working with various select player development teams.

Prior to joining Northeastern, Guerriero spent seven seasons (2015-22) on the Brown University men’s ice hockey coaching staff and his experience also includes one season (2013-14) as an assistant men’s ice hockey coach at Yale University and two campaigns (2011-13) in the same capacity at College of the Holy Cross.

Guerriero skated four seasons (2001-05) for the Northeastern men’s ice hockey team and served as captain his senior campaign. He played parts of seven seasons professionally before embarking on his coaching career.

ABOUT CARUSO

Caruso currently serves as senior director of amateur hockey programming for the Columbus Blue Jackets and will serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Youth Olympic Men’s Hockey Team for the first time. He previously was as an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-17 Select Team at the 2019 Five Nations Tournament. 

Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, Caruso served as manager of coaching and education for USA Hockey.

Caruso spent four seasons (2002-06) as a goaltender for the Ohio State University men’s ice hockey team and played six seasons of professional hockey.

TEAM USA SUPPORT STAFF ANNOUNCED

USA Hockey also announced the support staff for the 2024 U.S. Youth Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, including manager of international hockey Kelley Olsen (Colorado Springs, Colo.), team leader Wayne Sawchuk (Fairbanks, Alaska), athletic trainer Kevin Margarucci (Colorado Springs, Colo.), team physician Dr. Peter Donaldson (Detroit, Mich.) equipment managers Quinn Kennedy (Macon, Ga.) and Scott Aldrich (Colorado Springs, Colo.), and communications manager Clara Boudette (Ann Arbor, Mich.).
