GAME DAY: Team USA Set For Japan In WWC Quarterfinals

UTICA, N.Y. – The U.S. Women’s National Team will look to advance to the semifinals, facing off against Japan today in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship. 

Puck drop is set for 8:30 p.m. ET and can be viewed on NHL Network. 

TONIGHT'S MATCH UP

Tonight's game marks Team USA's quarterfinal match up at the 2024 IIHF Women's World Championship. The U.S. enters the playoff rounds with an undefeated record of 4-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L). They are the top seed after winning group A.

AGAINST JAPAN

Tonight's game is just the sixth all-time meeting between Japan and the United States at the IIHF Women's World Championship. The U.S. holds a perfect 5-0-0-0 record against Japan, having outscored them 39-3 in those five contests. 

LAST TIME AGAINST JAPAN

The U.S. and Japan last met in Women's Worlds play in the opening game of the 2023 IIHF Women's World Championship. Despite falling behind 1-0 early in the first, the U.S. recorded seven unanswered goals to win 7-1. Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight each recorded three points in the victory. 

IN THE QUARTERFINALS

The U.S. holds a 4-0-0-0 all-time record in quarterfinal play at the Women's WorldChampionship. The U.S. and Japan have previously met twice (2021, 2019) in quarterfinal action, with the U.S. winning both times. 

TEAM USA WINS GROUP A

Team USA finished preliminary round play with an undefeated record, winning group A and taking the top seed into the playoff round. It marks the first time since the 2022 Women's World Championship that the U.S. went undefeated in prelim action and the seventh time since 2011. The U.S. posted shutouts in three of its four prelim games.
